The Great Minds Library is a non-profit organization working to build libraries and promote literacy in public schools in underserved areas of Nigeria. Founded a little over a year ago, with the help of our donors, we have successfully established two functioning school libraries – one at a primary school and the other at a secondary school in Idumuje Unor, a town in the Delta State region of Nigeria.
Due to COVID-19, our focus has shifted slightly but is still aligned to our core mission and vision of empowering young people as readers and leaders and increasing literacy across underserved communities.
Instead of working to build another school-based library while schools are currently closed in Nigeria, we are shifting toward a new goal – to build our first community library to serve hundreds of children and families in the region, providing kids with access to books and other great programs like mentorship and community service.
As we work on this audacious goal, we are taking a critical stepping-stone on our journey toward this new goal by providing children in the region with free access to e-books through a personalized digital library called myON.
With a $20 donation, one child has access to a robust collection of thousands of fiction and nonfiction digital books for a whole year! myON will provide children with personal reading recommendations by combining their own interests, grade level, and Lexile reading level to automatically generate a list of “just right” books for independent reading. Readers can also access audio features and other close-reading tools to deepen engagement.
We are excited to launch this platform with access for 200 kids and we would love you to join us in making this happen through this GoFundMe fundraiser. We would be posting updates about the Great Minds Library Fundraiser on this GoFundMe page often, and also on our Facebook page and website. We invite you to stay up to date with all our activities, and support by sharing this with family and friends – every little bit helps.
