Katy Area Chamber of Commerce Hosting Three Virtual Candidate Town Halls This Week

By George Slaughter

Voters in two local Texas House of Representatives districts, along with the Katy Independent School District, have the chance to hear this week from candidates seeking those seats.

The Katy Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting these forums, all of which will be virtual and free to the public.

Here is a listing of the forums and candidates.

District 28, Texas House of Representatives

The forum is set for 6-7 p.m. Tuesday and will be broadcast on Facebook live at facebook.com/katychamber.

Incumbent Gary Gates, the Republican candidate, is seeking reelection against Dr. Eliz Markowitz, the Democratic candidate. Gates defeated Markowitz in a special election last year.

District 28 falls within Fort Bend County, and includes part of the City of Katy, along with Fulshear, Simonton, and Weston Lakes.

Katy Independent School District Board of Trustees

The forum is set for 3-4 p.m. Wednesday and will be broadcast on Facebook live at facebook.com/katychamber.

The position 3 incumbent, Ashley Vann, is running unopposed.

The position 4 incumbent, Courtney Doyle, is not seeking reelection. Michael Dillard, a human resources executive, and Leah Wilson, a retired U. S. Air Force veteran, have filed for that seat.

The position 5 incumbent, Bill Lacy, a mortgage broker, is seeking reelection against Greg Schulte, an engineer and project manager.

District 132, Texas House of Representatives

The forum is set for 6-7 p.m. Thursday and will be broadcast on Facebook live at facebook.com/katychamber.

Incumbent Gina Calanni, the Democratic candidate, is seeking reelection against Mike Schofield, the Republican candidate. Calanni defeated Schofield, who previously held the seat, in a close election in 2018.

District 132 falls within Harris County and includes much of the City of Katy.

The election is November 3. Typically, the school board election is held in May, but was pushed out to November this year at Gov. Greg Abbott’s urging, so officials could deal with the coronavirus pandemic.
