HOUSTON, TX (May 1, 2020) – The Center for Pursuit, which serves adults with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities, joined with key East End partners to distribute “care” bags to more than 500 senior citizens in the Greater East End area to ensure these community members feel cared for and included during the COVID-19 pandemic. The bags included masks, gloves, soap, hand sanitizer, food and sweets, which were all delivered today by representatives from nonprofits, along with elected officials.

The care bags were assembled by a handful volunteers, including the Center for Pursuit staff, on Apr. 30 at the historic Morales Radio Hall, an event space located at 111 N. Ennis St. The spacious area allowed workers to be spread out among several tables, all wearing masks and gloves for protection.

In addition to the Center for Pursuit, partners involved in the delivery of the bags were the Morales Foundation, New Hope Housing, El Jardin and La Imperial bakery, along with elected officials State Senator Carol Alvarado, State Representative Christina Morales, Councilmember Karla Cisneros and Councilmember Robert Gallegos. Locations where the care bags were dropped off include 6000 Telephone Senior Living, Villas on Winkler, Clayton Homes, John Goldberg Apartments and Canal Street Apartments. El Jardin donated tacos, while La Imperial Bakery provided sweet treats for the residents.

“We were thrilled to work with some wonderful East End partners on this project that demonstrated compassion for seniors in the area who might feel even more isolated during the pandemic,” says Charles C. Canton, president and CEO for the Center for Pursuit. “Partnerships with other East End entities are very important to us because it makes us all stronger together.”

The Center for Pursuit is currently building a new facility on Harrisburg Boulevard in the heart of the East End.
