From Pickleball to Mini-Libraries, New Cane Island Park Will Appeal to All Ages

KATY, TX (June 4, 2019) – The Katy community of Cane Island will soon open a new park and playground experience for all ages where residents can enjoy pickleball, one of America’s fastest-growing sports, a children’s playground and free books available in all-weather mini-libraries.

Cane Island’s seven-acre Paperback Park will open this summer at Pitts Road and Cane Island Parkway as one of the few locales in Katy to offer courts for pickleball, a sport combining elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. Pickleball is played as singles or doubles on a badminton-sized court with a slightly modified tennis net.

In addition to pickleball courts, the park will feature a toddler park, children’s playground for kids five and older, Splash Pad, synthetic lawn play area, courts for basketball and volleyball and shaded pavilion.

Paperback Park also will offer several mini-libraries, small book-sharing units installed by Little Free Library, the world’s largest book-sharing movement. Those who enjoy a book are asked to simply return it to the park when they are finished. Each mini-library holds about 20 books.

“It’s a place where families can connect with neighbors on the playground or sports court or simply relax with a good book,” notes Lawren Eckhardt, Cane Island director of marketing. “We’ve been looking at the book-sharing concept for quite some time. This park just seemed to be the ideal location.”

Both residents and non-residents can contribute books by storing them in one of the mini-libraries, Eckhardt adds.

Cane Island offers new homes from the $270s to the millions by several award-winning Houston builders. In addition to its parks and playgrounds, the award-winning community features the resort-quality Cane Quarter with The Oaks Kitchen & Bar, now open for lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch, lagoon-style family pool and cabanas, children’s water playground, lap pool, two-story fitness center, yoga studio with on-demand classes, fireplace loft, Katy’s only glass-walled conservatory and a central lawn for movie nights and other community gatherings.

To reach the Katy community of new homes, take the Cane Island Parkway exit off Interstate 10 minutes west of the Grand Parkway. Head north on Cane Island Parkway and take the roadway directly into the community. Paperback Park will be on the right past Cane Quarter.
