Della Cheney tells way of life of Haida, Tlingit people

‘Weaving Our World’ released

Della Cheney marks her publishing debut with the release of “Weaving Our World” (published by Xlibris), an exposition of the colorful and unique culture of the Haida and Tlingit people and the role of weaving in their life.

Cheney offers “Weaving Our World” as an introduction of why the Tlingit and Haida people weave today. “Some weave for their livelihood and some for their families. I chose to weave for my family because we love to celebrate life as participants of the Tlingit and Haida peoples of Southeast Alaska,” she says.

Entertaining and informative, the book will appeal to any reader who wants to learn more about the Tlingit and Haida people and how they use their weaving techniques to celebrate their way of life.

“It is relevant in today’s society because it is a way of life of weavers in Alaska and Canada and is used in the celebration of life and death of the people in those areas. The book imparts to readers the importance of weaving in our communities and how we, the Tlingit and Haida people, lift each other up during life and death ceremonies,” Cheney adds.

A snippet from “Weaving Our World” reads:

Harvesting: Since I’ve become a weaver, I have found that harvesting includes the harvester being of strong, mind, body and spirit. Learning when, where, and how to harvest the resources reminds me that we are stewards of the land, air and sea.
