    Fort Bend County Libraries’ Adult Services staff present a variety of free, introductory computer classes each month. The classes consist of a hands-on introduction to basic skills for people who would like to learn more about using these computer and technology programs. The classes take place in the Computer Labs of the libraries; seating is limited and reservations are required.

    Are you learning to speak English? Would you like some practice in a casual, informal atmosphere? Fort Bend County Libraries presents a program for individuals of all nationalities who would like a place to practice their English language and conversation skills. The “ESL Conversation Circles” provide an opportunity for non-English-speaking people to gather in a relaxed setting, and discuss topics of their own choosing while practicing their English skills.

    The ESL Conversation Circles will take place at multiple locations in the Fort Bend County library system in May. Reservations are NOT required. The schedule is as follows:

    Popular Digital Magazines Available Online Through Libraries' Flipster Service

    Patrons of Fort Bend County Libraries (FBCL) have instant access to popular magazines online through the libraries’ Flipster® service from EBSCO Information Services. Flipster is a next-generation magazine service that allows people to browse digital versions of the latest issues of popular magazines for adults, teens, and children, courtesy of the library.

    Demonstrations of this free online resource will take place at the following locations in May, but those who are interested may also inquire about this resource at any time at any FBCL location. Reservations are required for the demonstrations.

    • Monday, May 6, 6:00 pm – Mission Bend Branch Library(8421 Addicks Clodine Road)
    • Wednesday, May 22, 11:00 am – Fulshear Branch Library(6350 GM Library Road)

    Flipster magazines are full-print, full-color digital duplicates of the hardcopy print magazine, and library cardholders can access them remotely through the Fort Bend County Libraries website, www.fortbend.lib.tx.us. The libraries’ collection includes 58 popular titles for adults and 11 titles for youth, including selections such as Forbes, Essence, Car & Driver, Highlights, People, and much more.

    Magazines can be read online on a computer or downloaded to smartphones or tablets, including Android™ phones and tablets, Apple® phones and tablets, and Kindle Fire tablets, for offline reading anytime, anywhere on a free Flipster app that can be downloaded from the Apple App or Google Play stores.

    Flipster provides an easy-to-use, browse-able reading experience. An online newsstand provides a carousel of the most recent issues in various categories, and many magazines provide access to back-issues as well.

    The collection can be accessed 24/7, and there is no limit to the number of magazines that can be downloaded. There will never be overdue fines for Flipster magazines because the digital file will automatically disappear after a predetermined length of time. A magazine that is published weekly can be downloaded for 2 days, and a magazine that is published monthly can be downloaded for one week.

    Fort Bend County Libraries will present a variety of programs, classes, and activities in May that encourage fledgling writers, or anyone who has ever wanted to write a novel, to take the plunge and pursue their dreams in a helpful, supportive environment.

    Throughout the month, Fort Bend County Libraries will host programs that are intended to encourage new writers by providing tips and tricks, writing and publishing advice, and support from other aspiring novelists.

    These programs are free and open to the public.

    The featured topic this month is “Exposition.” During the latter half of the workshop, participants will have an opportunity to share their manuscripts with others and get constructive feedback.

    From beginning blogger to published novelist, writers of all genres and experience levels are welcome to write, share, learn, support, network, and critique each other’s work at this monthly meeting. Writing prompts, brainteasers, and brief exercises will be available to ignite the imaginations of any and all wordsmiths who wish to hone their craft. This program is recommended for adults and teens aged 14 and up.

    Experience some of the vibrant cultures of the world at Fort Bend County Libraries’ Multicultural Festival on Saturday, May 11, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, at George Memorial Library, located at 1001 Golfview Drive in Richmond, Texas.

    Sponsored by the Friends of the George Memorial Library, the Multicultural Festival celebrates the rich, cultural diversity of the county and of the people who reside in it. Featuring an exciting line-up of performances, artisans, games, crafts, and more, the festival will have free activities and fun for the whole family.

    In addition to the exhibit areas, which can be visited throughout the festival, special performances will be featured in the Jodie E. Stavinoha Amphitheater:

    • 10:30-11:30 am– “World Beats: Houston Parai Kuzhu and Joy of Djembe.” These drum ensembles will perform traditional rhythmic pieces representative of the cultures of south Asia and Africa. Learn about the history and cultural significance of these ancient instruments in this interactive event from these Garage Arts Project performance groups.
    • 11:30 am-12:00 noon– Lamar Consolidated High School Mariachi Band will entertain the audience with traditional music of the Hispanic culture.

     12:00 noon-1:00 pm– Danzas Folkloricas de Solei – Ballet Folklorico. Performers, aged 4 to 18 years, will demonstrate folk dances of Latin America.

    • 1:30-2:00 pm– “World Beats: Kaminari Taiko of Houston’s Thunderstudies.” Learn about the history and cultural significance of these rhythm instruments from Japan in this interactive event from this Garage Arts Project performance group.

    “A Taste of African Heritage” – a cooking demonstration of African Diaspora cuisine – will take place from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm, in the Meeting Room. Erica Knighton, from the Prairie View A&M Cooperative Extension Office, will demonstrate how to cook dishes based on the healthy food traditions of people with traditional African roots, with influences from the cultures of the Caribbean, South America, and the southern states of the U.S.

    From 12:00 to 12:30 pm, in Room 2C, discover the vibrant music, dancing, foods, culture, and history of Lebanon, presented by the American Lebanese Cultural Center. Sample popular Lebanese dishes or join in with a lively dabke dance demonstration!

    From 12:45 to 1:30 pm, join in an interactive “Movement & Rhythm Exploration” session in the Bohachevsky Gallery on the lower level of the library. Performers from the Garage Arts Project will teach dance steps and explain the historical and cultural significance of the music and movements of Africa and India.

    From 1:00 to 1:30 pm, discover the unique beauty and culture of India, from the serene snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas to the vibrant traditions, food, and dance of its people. This program, “Incredible India,” will be presented by Unite & Inspire, a nonprofit organization of volunteers who share their expertise with the community. This program will take place in Room 2C.

    While in the Bohachevsky Gallery, visit the Sugar Land Heritage Foundation’s exhibit on the history of the Hispanic community in the area.

    Stations representing cultures from around the world will be set up in the Lobby and the 2nd-floor landing. Stop by the Japan America Society-Houston booth to join in the edamame chopstick challenge or be mesmerized by Max Nguyen’s origami skills at the Asian Pacific American Heritage Association table!

    Visit the American Lebanese Cultural Center table, the Nigerian American Multicultural Council’s booth, or the Vietnamese Cultural and Science Association’s station for fascinating information on their culture, traditions, and fashion! The Fort Bend Museum and the Friends of the Library will also be represented in the exhibit areas.

    Food trucks and music will add to the festive atmosphere in the parking lot of the library. Visitors are invited to enjoy their lunches and refreshments in the library’s outdoor amphitheater during the performances.

    Patrons of Fort Bend County Libraries (FBCL) have instant access to popular magazines online through the libraries’ Flipster® service from EBSCO Information Services. Flipster is a next-generation magazine service that allows people to browse digital versions of the latest issues of popular magazines for adults, teens, and children, courtesy of the library.

    Demonstrations of this free online resource will take place at the following locations in May, but those who are interested may also inquire about this resource at any time at any FBCL location. Reservations are required for the demonstrations.

    Flipster magazines are full-print, full-color digital duplicates of the hardcopy print magazine, and library cardholders can access them remotely through the Fort Bend County Libraries website, www.fortbend.lib.tx.us. The libraries’ collection includes 58 popular titles for adults and 11 titles for youth, including selections such as Forbes, Essence, Car & Driver, Highlights, People, and much more.

    Magazines can be read online on a computer or downloaded to smartphones or tablets, including Android™ phones and tablets, Apple® phones and tablets, and Kindle Fire tablets, for offline reading anytime, anywhere on a free Flipster app that can be downloaded from the Apple App or Google Play stores.

    Flipster provides an easy-to-use, browse-able reading experience. An online newsstand provides a carousel of the most recent issues in various categories, and many magazines provide access to back-issues as well.

    The collection can be accessed 24/7, and there is no limit to the number of magazines that can be downloaded. There will never be overdue fines for Flipster magazines because the digital file will automatically disappear after a predetermined length of time. A magazine that is published weekly can be downloaded for 2 days, and a magazine that is published monthly can be downloaded for one week.

    Younger children will enjoy the “Summer Reading Challenge for Children,” while students in grades 6-8 can participate in activities for older kids in the “Middle School Summer Challenge.” Teens in high school can participate with adults in the “YA/Adult Summer Reading Challenge” to win prizes.

    There is no charge to join the Summer Reading Challenge, and it is open to everyone, regardless of the county of residence. Participants may register at any Fort Bend County library, or they may register online by going to the FBCL website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us) and clicking on the “SRC Sign-Up” image, which will become available on May 27. For every 20 books read, the participant’s name will also be written on a cut-out shape of a hot-air balloon to be displayed in that branch library.

    Drawings for puppets will take place weekly. The names of readers who complete the goal of reading 20 books or more will be entered into a drawing for gift cards -- donated by the Friends of the Library organizations -- from area stores. One winner from each library location will be selected in a drawing that will take place in early September.

    Exciting free activities are planned, while area readers in grades 6-8 participate in the Middle School Summer Reading Challenge by logging online the time they spend reading.

    Upon completion of 10 hours (600 minutes) of reading, readers will receive a mystery prize. After completing 20 hours (1200 minutes) of reading, they will receive a trophy. The names of participants who complete 20 or more hours of reading will be entered into a drawing for a $25-gift card – donated by the Friends of the Library -- that will be awarded to one lucky reader at each branch library, in a drawing that will take place in early September.

     YA/Adult Summer Reading Challenge

    Adults of all ages, including young adults in high school, may participate in the YA/Adult Summer Reading Challenge by logging online the time they spend reading. Special activities for high school-age teens are planned throughout the summer at the libraries.

    The Summer Reading Challenge is sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries, the Friends of the Library organizations that support the county library system, and by the Collaborative Summer Library Program, a consortium of states working together to provide high-quality children’s summer-reading program materials for public libraries.

    Summer Reading Challenge for Children

    Younger children are encouraged to read or listen to as many books as they can and they will earn rewards based on the total number of books they read or have read to them. For the first five books read, the child will receive a bookmark. The rewards continue with a certificate for 10 books, a puzzle pen for 15 books, and a reading trophy for the first 20 books read. For every 20 books read, the participant’s name will also be written on a cut-out shape of a hot-air balloon to be displayed in that branch library.

    Drawings for puppets will take place weekly. The names of readers who complete the goal of reading 20 books or more will be entered into a drawing for gift cards -- donated by the Friends of the Library organizations -- from area stores. One winner from each library location will be selected in a drawing that will take place in early September.

    Middle School Summer Reading Challenge

    Exciting free activities are planned, while area readers in grades 6-8 participate in the Middle School Summer Reading Challenge by logging online the time they spend reading.

    Upon completion of 10 hours (600 minutes) of reading, readers will receive a mystery prize. After completing 20 hours (1200 minutes) of reading, they will receive a trophy. The names of participants who complete 20 or more hours of reading will be entered into a drawing for a $25-gift card – donated by the Friends of the Library -- that will be awarded to one lucky reader at each branch library, in a drawing that will take place in early September.

     YA/Adult Summer Reading Challenge

    Adults of all ages, including young adults in high school, may participate in the YA/Adult Summer Reading Challenge by logging online the time they spend reading. Special activities for high school-age teens are planned throughout the summer at the libraries.

    All YA and adult readers who complete the goal of reading for 1,000 minutes will earn a Halcyon Water Bottle with a flip-carry lid, while supplies last. In addition, the names of participants who log at least 1,000 minutes of reading time will be entered into a drawing for a $25-gift card – donated by the Friends of the Library -- that will be awarded to one reader at each branch library in a drawing that will take place at the end of August.

    An ultimate grand prize will be awarded to one reader from throughout the library system. Participants in the YA/Adult Summer Reading Challenge who complete the program by logging 1,000 minutes of reading time will be entered into a drawing for a 32 GB Fire HD 8 tablet with a red case, which will be awarded to one winner in the library system at the end of August.

    Fort Bend County Libraries (FBCL) presents special reading challenges during the summer to encourage reading among children from birth and up, as well as teens and adults. “Adventure Begins @ Your Library” is the theme for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, which takes place at all FBCL locations.

    Online registration for the 2024 Summer Reading Challenge begins on Monday, May 27, and continues through August 31. Library activities for children begin during the week of June 3, and continue through July 27. Activities for high school students also begin the week of June 3, and continue through August 24.

    Younger children will enjoy the “Summer Reading Challenge for Children,” while students in grades 6-8 can participate in activities for older kids in the “Middle School Summer Challenge.” Teens in high school can participate with adults in the “YA/Adult Summer Reading Challenge” to win prizes.

    There is no charge to join the Summer Reading Challenge, and it is open to everyone, regardless of the county of residence. Participants may register at any Fort Bend County library, or they may register online by going to the FBCL website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us) and clicking on the “SRC Sign-Up” image, which will become available on May 27. When the online registration form has been completed, readers will then have their own online page on which to record their books and reading time.
