8:00 am: Libraries’ Meeting Rooms & Conference Rooms Available For Reservation Starting Feb 28

Feb 28, 2022

As of Monday, February 28, 2022, Fort Bend County Libraries’ (FBCL) meeting rooms and conference rooms are available for reservation by the general public. The first date that can be reserved at any location is March 7.

A list of meeting rooms and conference rooms at all FBCL locations can be viewed on the library system’s website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us); room capacities are also shown for each option. Meeting rooms and conference rooms can be reserved online through FBCL’s website, or by calling or visiting the library to request an application.

There is no charge to use meeting rooms, conference rooms, or study rooms. Study rooms are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Masks can be recommended but not required, and room capacity cannot be restricted any more than the official limit.

Instructions for the use of meeting rooms are as follows:

General Rules

Library activities and programs are given first priority for scheduling of meeting rooms.

All meetings must be open to the public and to the media.

Smoking is not permitted.

No lighted candles or open flames may be used.

No items may be affixed to the walls (e.g., banners, posters, decorations).

No animals will be allowed in meeting rooms unless they are an integral part of a scheduled program or are in the service of a disabled person. Such animals must be leashed or caged at all times.

The length of time that a meeting room is reserved must include time for setting up and for returning the room to good order.

Groups of high school age and under must be sponsored by and their meetings attended by an adult.

Meeting rooms may not be used by:

Groups whose use of a meeting room would interfere with regular library functions; or

Groups whose activities involve more than normal wear and tear on meeting rooms; or

Groups meeting for private and/or social activities such as showers, birthday parties, weddings, and recitals; or

Groups that have flagrantly or repeatedly violated library meeting-room policies.

Publicity must neither state nor imply that the library is either sponsoring or endorsing a program or meeting unless such is the case; neither shall publicity state or imply that attendance is limited to group members.(Publicity must NOT give out the library's phone number as information contact.)

Admission fees are not allowed.

Applications for use of meeting rooms

Application forms may be completed online, printed out and returned in person, or submitted by mail, fax, or email. The person responsible for making a meeting-room application will be considered the official contact person for the group.

A completed Application for Use of Meeting Room form must be received by the Branch Manager at least one week prior to the meeting date. Rooms may be scheduled up to three months in advance. Applications will be accepted and scheduled in the order received. In order to encourage the most-equitable use of meeting rooms, only one meeting at a time may be scheduled; following a meeting a group may schedule another, if the room is available at the desired time.

The library reserves the right to change or cancel reservations if an emergency occurs, or if a special library program intervenes. In such case, 48 hours’ notice will be given. In either case, the group may be assigned to another location, or, if no other accommodation is available, the meeting room commitment will be cancelled. A guest group may postpone or cancel a scheduled meeting, but must notify the Branch Manager at least 48 hours in advance. The meeting may be rescheduled if a room is available.

Choice of hours

Meeting rooms may be used, as available, during regular library hours. Evening meetings must be concluded 30 minutes prior to regular library closing time, and the room must be vacated by closing time.

Any group that fails to vacate library premises at closing may be denied future use of meeting room.

Room set-up

The number in attendance at a meeting must not exceed the seating capacity of the meeting room. Open aisles must be maintained within the seating arrangements to provide clear access to exits.

Set-up for the meeting room (tables, chairs, etc.) is the responsibility of the group reserving the room.

Library-owned equipment: Use of library-owned equipment must be requested at the time of application. Changes in requirements can be requested no later than 48 hours prior to the meeting and are subject to availability of the equipment. At the time of the meeting, no additional equipment may be requested, nor will library staff be available to assist with equipment. An individual, to be named by the group, must be instructed in the use of library-owned equipment (e.g., audiovisual equipment) prior to the meeting by the Audiovisual Services Department or by branch library staff. Groups failing to abide by library-equipment policies may be denied future use of meeting rooms.

Group-owned equipment

Groups providing their own equipment or display materials are responsible for transportation to and from the meeting rooms. Library staff should not be asked to assist.

The library is not responsible for equipment, supplies, or other materials owned by a guest group and used in the library. The library cannot supply storage for equipment and/or materials and supplies belonging to guest groups.

The person reserving a room will be responsible for maintenance of order. This person must:

Be responsible for the group's compliance with library rules and protection of library property.

Notify the building manager when the meeting room has been cleared.

Assure that the room is left in good order.

If refreshments are served, sack lunches and finger foods are suggested, but catered meals may be permitted if special arrangements are made when a room is reserved. Alcoholic beverages may not be served. Food is to be served only in the scheduled room, and group members must not carry food or drink throughout the building.

10:00 am: Fort Bend County Libraries Launch New Online Book Club

Mar 23, 2022

Fort Bend County Libraries (FBCL) will launch a new online book club – FBCL Reads: An Online Book Club – on Wednesday, March 23, beginning at 10:00 am. The first book to be discussed is Daisy Jones & The Six, a novel written by Taylor Jenkins Reid.

FBCL Reads book-club meetings will be live-streamed through Webex so that readers can participate virtually and interact with others in real time; the book club will meet online on a permanent basis.

“During the pandemic, many FBCL book clubs began meeting virtually so that readers could participate from home and maintain social distancing,” says FBCL Adult Programming Manager Christina Tam. “The online format became very popular for many people, who wanted to interact with other readers but preferred the convenience of meeting virtually.”

The library system’s book clubs that met in-person at the libraries in the past have resumed meeting at the libraries again, but the new FBCL Reads book club will remain online for readers who prefer the virtual format.

“Virtual book-club meetings have other benefits, too,” says Tam. “Online participants save time because they don’t have to travel to the meeting place, they’re able to participate from wherever they happen to be, and they can wear pajamas if they want. They can juggle responsibilities at home and work, but still be able to enjoy a good book with others.”

The book to be discussed for the first meeting – Daisy Jones & The Six -- is available in print, audio, and digitally as an e-book and e-audiobook through FBCL’s e-Library OverDrive collection. Additional print copies are available at George Memorial Library in Richmond.

In this riveting New York Times bestselling novel, Taylor Jenkins Reid captures the making of one of the biggest rock-and-roll bands of the ‘70s. Daisy Jones is a teen coming of age in the late 1960s on LA’s Sunset Strip. When Daisy teams up with Billy Dunne and The Six, their chemistry ignites. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.

Join in this inaugural meeting of the FBCL Reads Virtual Book Club and help launch the new club to a great start! The book club will meet monthly on the fourth Wednesday.

The book club is free and open to the public. Registration is required; a link to the Webex teleconference will be emailed to all who register. To register online at the library’s website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us), click on “Classes & Events,” select “Virtual Programs,” and find the program on the date indicated. Participants may also register by calling George Memorial Library at 281-342-4455.

6:00 pm: Libraries’ Online Podcast Club Focuses On “Texas” In March

Mar 24, 2022

The next meeting of the FBCL Online Podcast Club will take place on Thursday, March 24, beginning at 6:00 pm. In recognition of Texas History Month in March, the theme for the month is “Texas.” A link to the Webex meeting will be emailed to all who register.

Similar to a book club, the Podcast Club provides an opportunity for podcast listeners to get together to discuss podcast selections from a themed podcast-listening list and share their opinions on trending topics. Each month features a different theme, along with a short list of podcast episodes.

A direct link to the podcasts can be found on Fort Bend County Libraries’ online calendar of Virtual events on the FBCL website. The playlist of podcasts from which to choose includes:

Introduction & Busting Common Myths About Texas” – How to Be a Texan (33 minutes). Have you ever wondered whether all of the various myths that you hear about Texas and Texans are true? Delve into some of the more common myths, confirm some and debunk others.

The Archive War – The Struggle Between Austin and Houston” – Texas Tales (28 minutes). The Archive War was the battle that decided ultimately if Houston or Austin would be the state capital. Hear about the two main power players (Sam Houston / Houston and Mirabeau Lamar / Austin) who worked relentlessly to secure the most important Texas documents and where they would ultimately reside.

Why Can’t We Just Forget the Alamo?” – The Experiment (29 minutes). The epic, oft-told origin story of Texas centers on the Lone Star State’s most infamous battle -- the Battle of the Alamo -- where American heroes such as Davy Crockett fought to the death against the Mexican army to secure Texas’s independence. The only problem, according to writer and journalist Bryan Burrough, is that this founding legend isn’t all true. Burrough and two other Texan writers set out to debunk the myth of the Alamo, only to find themselves in an unexpected battle with Texans still trying to protect their state’s revered origin story.

Lady Bird Johnson” – Shmanners (32 minutes). Learn about presidential First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson.

The All-Women Texas Supreme Court” – Texas: Slang for Crazy (5 minutes). In 1925, three women sat on the highest court in Texas for a few very good reasons.

The Texas Pledge of Allegiance” – Texas: Slang for Crazy (4 minutes). Each morning, students in Texas start their day with not just one, but two pledges.

How Houston Became One of the Nation’s Most Diverse Cities,” Let’s Go Together (39 minutes). Annise Parker, former councilwoman, controller, and mayor of Houston, talks about the city she loves. She shares the story of how she became the first openly LGBTQIA person to be elected mayor of a major U.S. city, and why she thinks Houston became one of the most diverse cities in the nation.

Could Texas Really Be the Future of America?” – Texas Matters (28 minutes). Getting a complete picture of the future of the Texas economy isn’t easy. Steven Pedigo gives his take in a recent essay in the New York Times titled "Texas is the Future of America." He is the founding executive director of the LBJ Urban Lab and a professor of practice at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin.

The FBCL Online Podcast Club is free and open to the public. Registration is required; a link to the Webex meeting will be emailed to all who register. To register online at the library’s website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us), click on “Classes & Events,” select “Virtual Programs,” and find the program. 6:00 pm: Mamie George Community Center in Richmond to Host Open House

Mar 31, 2022

The community is invited to learn more about help available in Fort Bend County through the Mamie George Community Center (MGCC), the hub for services provided by Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.  An open house is scheduled on Thursday, March 31, 6:00-8:00 p.m. at 1111 Collins Rd., Richmond, Texas, 77469.

Completely open following the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Catholic Charities’ center in Richmond offers services to prevent hunger and homelessness, provide nourishing meals and activities for seniors, support women veterans and much more for people in need.

“Come see us,” said Gladys Brumfield-James, MGCC executive director.  “We re-opened our doors to the community last summer, after closing for several months to protect our clients during the pandemic.  We’ve been up and running fully for months now, to ensure that our seniors – and the community – can experience the comfort of fellowship, while benefiting from the many services we offer.”

The open house will showcase the range of services available, such as Trini’s Market, a large food pantry that allows clients to select the foods they prefer in a grocery store-like setting.  In addition, activity areas for seniors include Patty’s Café, serving weekday lunches to low-income individuals, as well as an art room and fitness center.

Catholic Charities in Fort Bend County has one of the larger food pantries in the Houston Food Bank’s network of partner agencies.  With the help of a faithful corps of hundreds of volunteers, the Mamie George Community Center has distributed approximately 950,000 pounds of food to nearly 27,000 families since July 2021.

“Volunteering at the Mamie George Community Center provides me with the opportunity to help supply food to hundreds of families each week,” said volunteer Peter Jakubenas, recipient of Catholic Charities’ Charity in Action Award/Fort Bend County in 2021.  “At the same time, I meet new friends and get a workout.  Much more rewarding than going to the gym.”

For additional information about the open house, contact Matt Johns, 713-874-6659, mjohns@catholiccharities.org.
