    Fort Bend County Libraries’ Cinco Ranch Branch Library will present the program “Butterfly Gardening,” on Saturday, March 4, from 10:30 am to 12:00 noon, in the Meeting Room of the library, located at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd in Katy.

    Fort Bend County Master Gardeners will talk about which plants attract different types of butterflies to gardens. Discover which plants are hosts for caterpillars, and which are sources of nectar for adult butterflies.

    Learn about some of the online resources that are available for family-history research at a special program, “Genealogy Online,” on Tuesday, March 7, from 10:30 to 11:30 am, in the Computer Lab at Fort Bend County Libraries’ Cinco Ranch Branch Library, located at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd in Katy.

    Learn more about some of the online resources that are available for family-history research, including FamilySearch.org and HeritageQuest. Library staff will provide an introduction to many of the free online resources that are available to the genealogical researcher, such as FindaGrave.com. Tips and strategies for a more efficient Internet search will also be demonstrated.

    The program is free and open to the public. Seating is limited, however, and reservations are required. To register online at the library’s website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us), click on “Events,” select “Cinco Ranch Branch,” and find the program. Participants may also register by calling the library at 281-395-1311, or by visiting the library.

    Those who are interested in more local-history or genealogy resources, are encouraged to join the Family-History Research FBCL Facebook group page. Managed by the Genealogy & Local History department at George Memorial Library in Richmond, the group page is an interactive, online forum for sharing genealogy tips and resources, as well as local-history stories.

    Have you ever wondered where your ancestors came from?  Are you curious about their military service or medical history? Learn the basics of beginning your genealogy research at a special introductory program, “Researching Your Family History,” on Thursday, March 9, from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon, in the Meeting Room at Fort Bend County Libraries’ Bob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch Library, 8100 FM 359 South in Fulshear.

    In this introductory class, beginning family-history researchers will learn how to start their research. Library staff will provide a basic introduction to many of the resources that are available to the beginning genealogical researcher. Items that will be introduced include print resources, materials that are available on microfilm, and basic online tools such as the Ancestry.com and Heritage Quest USA databases. Get tips on ways to search the databases, and learn how to fill out basic genealogical forms.

    Anyone interested in more local-history or genealogy resources is encouraged to join the Family-History Research FBCL Facebook group page. Managed by the Genealogy & Local History department at George Memorial Library in Richmond, the group page is an interactive, online forum for sharing genealogy tips and resources, as well as local-history stories.

    In recognition of National Craft Month in March, Fort Bend County Libraries will present a series of craft-themed programs to introduce people to new hobbies and activities, and to give current crafters inspiration and new ideas.

    Find inspiration, get feedback, or simply enjoy the camaraderie of other crafters during these free events. Samples of the library’s instructional books, magazines, and websites on various crafts will be available.

    The schedule of activities in March is as follows:

    • Craft Club– Tuesdays, March 14 and 28, 2:00-4:00 pm, Cinco Ranch Branch Library, 2620 Commercial Center Blvd, Katy.

    Craft enthusiasts of all experience levels who enjoy any type of crafting are invited to attend to get other crafters’ perspectives, critiques, and suggestions. Chat and network with other crafters who enjoy anything from art and needlework to woodwork and much more! Those attending should bring their projects and their own crafting supplies. Crafters are invited to come and go as time permits.

    These programs are sponsored by the Friends of the Library organizations that support each library.

    The activities are free and open to the public. Registration is required for some of the programs.     Fort Bend County Libraries invites children entering grades K through 12 to a musical performance of “Storytelling Through Sound” on Thursday, March 16, from 10:15 to 11:00 am, in the Meeting Room at the Bob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch Library, located at 8100 FM 359 South in Fulshear.

    Music tells stories, just like books. In this interactive musical storytelling performance, Houston harpist Hope Cowan will demonstrate the techniques that composers use to tell their stories. Children will then have an opportunity to invent their own sound story and hear it come to life on the harp.

    One of Houston’s most sought-after event harpists, Cowan is principal harpist with the Symphony of Southeast Texas and is a founding member of both the Deciduous and the Lynx Trios. Current president of the Greater Houston Chapter of the American Harp Society, she is on the faculty for the Houston Summer Harp Festival and is an alumna of the Da Camera Youth Artist program.

    Made possible by a grant through Young Audiences of Houston, the performance is free and open to the public. Registration is not required, but seating is limited to the first 50 guests.

    • Nifty Needlers” -- Friday, March 17, 12:00 noon-2:00 pm, Bob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch Library, 8100 FM 359 South, Fulshear

    Needlework enthusiasts of all experience levels who enjoy any type of crocheting, knitting, or sewing are invited to attend to get other needlecrafters’ perspectives, critiques, and suggestions. Those attending should bring their own yarn, strings, and needles to start or finish a project, while chatting, networking, and enjoying the company of fellow needlecrafters. The group meets on the 3rd Friday of every month.

    These programs are sponsored by the Friends of the Library organizations that support each library.

    Fort Bend County Libraries’ Cinco Ranch Branch Library will present a special program for job hunters, “Sharpening Your Interviewing Skills,” on Monday, March 20, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm, in the Meeting Room of the library, located at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd in Katy.

    Workforce Solutions’ Regional Facilitator Joshua Allmon will provide helpful tips for job hunters who would like to sharpen their job-hunting skills. Get prepared for venturing into the job market by getting tips for the employment interview. Learn about common interview questions and the best answers, proper attire, and interview do’s and don’ts. Discover ways to portray confidence and get the job!

    Fort Bend County Libraries’ Adult Services staff at the Cinco Ranch Branch Library will present a free, introductory computer class, “Introduction to MS Publisher,” for version 2016, on Wednesday, March 22, from 10:15 to 11:30 am, in the Computer Lab of the library, located at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd in Katy.

    Learn the basics of using this desktop-publishing software program to create greeting cards, invitations, forms, banners, signs, and much more by using templates and clip art.

    The class is free and open to the public. Seating is limited, however, and reservations are required.
