Staying Well While Staying Home

By: Marjorie Broussard, M.D., Family Medicine, Kelsey-Seybold Clinic – Cinco Ranch

These are stressful and uncertain times. So many things have changed in such a short period of time, it’s understandable that we would turn to things that give us comfort. Unfortunately, for some that may mean overeating unhealthy foods and drinks, binge-watching TV shows, and unusual sleeping patterns.

Eventually, things will begin to resemble what normal was, but until then taking time to focus on your health while cooped up may be as crucial as the other protective measures you’re taking to avoid the coronavirus.

Stay Active

Your body needs to move to stay healthy, and physical activity helps relieve stress. Here are some things you can do to stay active at home:

  • Start your day with exercise. The key here is to move, move, move. You don’t need fancy equipment. Make use of what you have! If you don’t have equipment, train using your own body weight is just as effective. If you are a gym member, check to see if your gym is offering online workout classes through Facebook, Zoom, or YouTube. If these options are not available – go for a walk. A short, brisk, 20-min walk is just what this doctor ordered!
  • Get outside. Most areas, even if a shelter-in-place order has been given, allow residents to spend time outside. Play Frisbee, soccer, or toss around a ball with your kids. Take a walk with your spouse/roommate or bike around the neighborhood. Do some gardening. Being exposed to daylight is an important aspect of mental health, and the physical activity helps you stay fit, so do what you can to spend at least a short amount of time each day outdoors. Just be sure to keep a 6-foot distance from others who are not part of your household.
  • Spring cleaning. This is the time of year when many people want to do spring cleaning, but don’t have the time. Taking a day (or several) to clean out closets, organize drawers, or deep clean the house is a way to get active and occupy your body and mind.

Eat Right
Hopefully you’ve already stocked up on groceries, but if you’re heading out to the grocery store, remember to pick up fresh fruit, vegetables, and lean meats.

Not much of a cook? Now is a great time to find recipes on the internet. There are many cooking tutorials on YouTube, ranging in skill levels from beginner to advanced and your body will appreciate healthy, homemade meals.

Have Fun

Laughter really is the best medicine. If you live alone, stay in touch with friends or family who cheer you up. If you are staying home with family, play a game, have a dance-off, or watch a show or movie that makes you laugh.

If you have children with you, get down on their level. Playing, coloring, and puzzles can be both fun and therapeutic for children, and adults!

COVID-19 has created a situation most of us have never been in before. We’re all in this together. Taking time away from the ever-present coronavirus news to take time for yourself is crucial to getting through this outbreak.
