Are We Raising a Generation That Can No Longer Think Without Artificial Intelligence?

The Katy News | National Feature

KATY, TEXAS — Artificial intelligence is changing the way children learn, communicate, solve problems, and understand the world. But as AI becomes a regular part of childhood, an important question is emerging: Are we teaching the next generation to think independently, or are we teaching them to depend on technology for the answers?

For generations, children learned by making mistakes, asking questions, reading books, and working through difficult problems. Today, an AI chatbot can produce an explanation, solve an equation, or draft an essay in seconds.

The technology is remarkable. But convenience creates a new responsibility for parents and educators.

More Than Half of American Teens Have Used AI for Schoolwork

A February 2026 Pew Research Center study found that 54% of U.S. teenagers ages 13 to 17 had used AI chatbots to help with schoolwork.

The same study found that 59% believed students at their schools used AI to cheat at least somewhat often.

These findings reveal how quickly AI has entered education, even as schools and families continue developing rules for its appropriate use.

The question is no longer whether students will use AI. It is how they will use it.

When Technology Helps Students Learn

AI can provide meaningful educational benefits. Students can use it to understand difficult concepts, practice writing, explore scientific ideas, and receive explanations tailored to their learning needs.

For a student struggling with algebra, AI can explain the same problem several different ways. For a child learning a second language, it can provide conversation practice.

The danger is not necessarily the technology itself. It is the possibility that students will skip the thinking process entirely.

There is a difference between asking AI to explain a math problem and asking AI to complete the assignment.

One builds understanding. The other may prevent it.

What Happens to Critical Thinking?

Independent thinking develops through effort, curiosity, disagreement, and problem-solving.

If children increasingly rely on AI to write their arguments, evaluate information, and make everyday decisions, parents and educators must consider how those habits could influence long-term development.

The evidence does not establish that AI is making an entire generation incapable of thinking. That would be an unsupported conclusion.

However, the rapid adoption of AI makes independent thinking an important subject for further research and public discussion.

The Responsibility Starts at Home

Parents do not have to reject artificial intelligence to teach responsible use.

Families can encourage children to attempt assignments before consulting AI, verify chatbot responses against reliable sources, and explain answers in their own words.

Schools can distinguish between AI-assisted learning and submitting AI-generated work as original student work.

The goal should be to develop students who understand technology without becoming entirely dependent on it.

A Question for Katy and the Nation

From Katy, Texas, to classrooms across America, the same challenge is emerging.

Technology will continue to evolve. Artificial intelligence will become more capable. Future generations will encounter tools that today’s parents never imagined.

But technology should expand human potential, not replace curiosity, creativity, and independent judgment.

The question every parent should consider is simple: If artificial intelligence disappeared tomorrow, would our children still know how to find the answers?

The Katy News invites parents, teachers, and students to share their perspectives on the role AI should play in education.
