County Attorney’s New Filing Raises One Simple Question: Why Put Fort Bend County Through Months of Political Chaos?

RICHMOND, TX — After months of declaring that County Judge Daniel Wong’s appointment created a legal crisis and advancing legal arguments that were used to justify repeated Commissioners Court boycotts, the Fort Bend County Attorney is now asking the court to pause her own lawsuit in an attempt to get others to do the work for her. Fort Bend County taxpayers deserve to know why they were put through months of political theater, unnecessary litigation, and stalled county business, only to have the County Attorney request to pause her case and force Judge Wong to litigate in a different forum.

For months, the County Attorney and her political allies have claimed that Fort Bend County government could not lawfully function under County Judge Wong’s leadership.  During that same time, two Democrat commissioners repeatedly refused to attend Commissioners Court meetings, preventing county business from moving forward and leaving hundreds of thousands of residents without full representation.

Now, the County Attorney has asked the court to pause the quo warranto proceeding in favor of additional proceedings in the original Roberts case that she contends could resolve the issues she has raised.

“The County Attorney built her entire public narrative around the claim that County Judge Wong’s appointment was fatally defective,” said attorney Chris Hilton of Stone Hilton PLLC.  “Now she is asking the court to pause this very case so a different procedural path can be pursued.  If she does not even have the courage of her convictions, the obvious question is why Fort Bend County was dragged through months of unnecessary litigation, political division, and dysfunctional government instead of pursuing it in the first place.  The people of this county deserve a functioning County Attorney’s office—not legal gamesmanship.”

The motion does not ask the court to remove County Judge Wong from office.  Instead, it requests a temporary pause while additional proceedings occur in the Roberts case.

“My focus has never changed,” said Fort Bend County Judge Daniel Wong.  “While others have pursued political fights and courtroom battles, I have continued showing up every day to serve the people of Fort Bend County.  I’ve remained focused on public safety, emergency preparedness, county services, and keeping our government working for the families who depend on it.”

“If those who have chosen to boycott Commissioners Court now believe there is a path forward, I welcome them back,” Wong continued.  “The residents of Precincts 2 and 4 deserve commissioners who show up, participate, and do the job they were elected to do.  It’s time to put politics aside and get back to serving the people of Fort Bend County.”

County Judge Wong remains committed to allowing the judicial process to run its course while continuing to fulfill the responsibilities of his office and ensuring that the business of Fort Bend County continues without interruption.
