Seven Lakes’ Band Among the World’s Best

KATY, TX [May 8, 2025] – One of only three ensembles recognized in the world this year, the Seven Lakes High School Band earned the Sudler Shield, given by the internationally renowned John Philip Sousa Foundation for outstanding high school marching bands.

John Mays, Seven Lakes’ director of bands, along with district and campus administrators, staff and band members received the award this week at a celebratory concert.

“This is a truly special accomplishment and all members of the Seven Lakes’ band – students, directors, administrators and parents – should be proud,” said Damon Archer, executive director of fine arts in Katy ISD. “Congratulations to Mr. Mays and everyone for earning such a prestigious honor!”

Each year, an international jury of twenty-five experienced band directors adjudicate video submissions from bands around the world, selecting only those who exhibit the highest standards of excellence in performance, marching execution, choreography and show design.

Established to memorialize the venerated musician and band leader, the John Philip Sousa Foundation is dedicated to promoting greater understanding of band music.
