University of Houston-Downtown Hosts 11th Annual   Empower Houston’s Future   Greater Houston Environmental Summit

City Council Member Abbie Kamin To Attend, Along With Members of City and Harris County Administration

HOUSTON (Oct. 15, 2024) – UHD will host the 11th Annual Greater Houston Environmental Summit on Friday, Oct. 18, in an effort to drive sustainability and environmental education for its students and the local community. The summit, organized by the Citizens’ Environmental Coalition (CEC), will bring environmental leaders, advocates, and policy makers to campus, where they will address environmental issues.

Houston City Council Member Abbie Kamin will be in attendance, as will Mark Wilfalk, Director, City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department, Mandi Siebels, Senior Division Manager, City of Houston Public Works Department, and Lisa Lin, Director of Sustainability, Harris County.

Dr. Lisa Morano, Director of the Center for Urban Agriculture and Sustainability at UHD, said the summit is indicative of the university’s commitment to enhancing student success while addressing community concerns. “Exposing students to real-life issues helps provide context for what they’re learning, and it introduces them to valuable connections in the local environmental community,” she said. “Hosting the summit on campus is an honor—we get to show off our campus, of course, but in doing so we are driving change and commitment to sustainability in the Houston region.”

The summit provides an opportunity for students, faculty, staff, and community members to learn from experts, network with professionals, and workshop solutions for the challenges facing the Houston region.
