YMCA locations welcomed community members in need of assistance with the help of a $10,000 donation from CenterPoint Energy
HOUSTON (Jan. 19, 2024) – The YMCA of Greater Houston, in partnership with the City of Houston, opened its doors to hundreds of Houstonians during the January 2024 arctic freeze at various locations throughout the city. The centers provided hundreds of Houstonians a place to find warmth, utilize the lobby, charge devices, take classes, visit Child Watch, take a shower and more during normal operating hours. The Alief Family YMCA served as an overnight shelter for those who struggled to find a safe and warm place to sleep. CenterPoint Energy, through its charitable foundation, generously donated $10,000 that helped the YMCA of Greater Houston provide these critical resources.
“The YMCA remains committed to serving the community and being a place of connection, especially during severe weather conditions,” said Stephen Ives, President and CEO, YMCA of Greater Houston. “We are incredibly grateful to the CenterPoint Energy Foundation for its generous contribution as well as the City of Houston, staff members and volunteers for coming together to serve those in need. It is our responsibility to serve our neighbors, and we will continue to support the community to the best of our abilities.”
Several YMCA centers began serving families as early as 9 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 15, providing warmth and a safe space for those seeking refuge from the cold weather. The Alief Family YMCA, operating as an overnight shelter, opened at 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, providing blankets and a place to sleep for more than 70 families and individuals who needed a warm bed during below-freezing temperatures.
“Part of building a more resilient community means supporting others in times of need,” said Chasta Martin, Vice President of Field Services for CenterPoint Energy and YMCA of Greater Houston Board Member. “This donation is helping an incredibly impactful organization open its locations as a place of shelter, offering warmth and comfort throughout the city. Connecting Houstonians with crucial resources during extreme temperatures is just one way CenterPoint Energy is helping to support our communities.”
As shared goals, YMCA of Greater Houston and CenterPoint Energy strive to make a difference and positively impact the lives of Houstonians. In 2023, The CenterPoint Energy Foundation supported hundreds of organizations that have provided much-needed support to communities in need.
