Water consumption remains high in the City of Katy and surrounding areas. The City of Katy Public Works is requesting that residents and businesses reduce water usage any way possible to avoid moving into Stage 3 Drought Conditions, which would then require mandatory water restrictions.
Watering of lawns is one of the typical high uses of water. Lawns typically requires 1 – 1.5 inches total water per week spread out over the course of 2-3 days. To measure total inches, Scotts Lawn Care advises placing, clean, empty tuna cans in different spots around the lawn and measure how long it takes to collect 1 – 1.5 inches of water in each can. Since sprinkler coverage patterns may vary throughout the lawn use the average time it takes to fill all the cans.
The City is asking residents to irrigate only during the hours of 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. Fix any irrigation leaks or hose leaks, and refrain from establishing new landscaping until the City of Katy advises of improved drought status.
If living outside the defined City of Katy limits, please consult your respective HOA for any water conservation requirements. A partial list of some of the Katy area Community and Home Owners Associations:

Katy City Council member, Rory Robertson said heavy water usage is putting extra demands on City water pumps. Mayor Dusty Thiele urged Katy area residents to please follow the directives in regards to watering, including the areas of the city that are managed by home Owners Associations. The City proper is now in Stage 2. Additional information on water usage and conservation, contact City of Katy Public Works Department at 281-391-4820.
