Update on Improvements at the Katy Animal Control Shelter

By: Tom Behrens

The Katy City Council met in a regular monthly meeting, July 11, 2022, at the Katy City Hall to discuss, approve, or dismiss city matters. Mayor Dusty Thiele called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m.; Council members present were Mayor Pro Tem Chris Harris, Janet Corte, Gina Hicks, Dan Smith and Rory Robertson.

Katy Police Chief Chris Mears presented an update on the fencing being installed at the Katy Animal Control Shelter, 25839 I-10, Katy, TX 77494.

“We already have one dog run to the south of us and we are adding two dog runs to the west of us allowing a little more room for the animals to run and exercise,” said Mears. The additional dog runs will also have the added benefit of allowing prospective dog parents to view and interact with them. The fencing is expected to be complete by Aug. 5, 2022.

Chief Mears said the fencing and other improvements have been made possible through donations and partners in the community. “Tractor Supply and Costco have donated food. We have a small amount of money left in our budget and through partner donations we have added fans inside the building. The kennels have received a fresh coat of paint on the interior.”

Can families view the dogs through the website? “They can,” answered Mears, “but they need to come to the shelter to adopt an animal. Reservations are possible for visits.” A sign-up sheet is kept where prospective owners can leave their names and contact information. Animal Control’s phone number is 281-391-4740. The shelter is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Volunteer workers are always welcome; a background check is required.

The City Council meeting continued with approval of meeting minutes of 06.13.2022 and 06-27-22.

Two resolutions were submitted for consideration, the first being to authorize the mayor to accept Texas General Land Office funds allocated through the Regional Mitigation Program.

“We are very thankful for grant writers in helping the City to attain the money to solve some of the drainage issues,” voiced a council person. “There was no money in the budget available without the grants.” The money should be received by the City by Aug. 5, 2022.

The motion was made, seconded, and approved by vote.

The second resolution was to 10/20 Year Write Off of Property Taxes for 2022 in the amount of $1,394.99. Motion made to approve with no discussion and approved by vote.

The final item was the consideration of an ordinance appointing members to various City of Katy Boards and Commissions. Building and Standards, City Planning and Zoning, Convention and Tourism, Katy Heritage Park, Keep Katy Beautiful, Landscape Appeal Board, Parks & Recreation Advisory Board, Social Services Advisory Board, Board of Adjustments, Katy Development Authority, Katy Management District Number 1, and Village at Katy Development District. Motion for approval.

After appropriate comments of thanks and appreciation by the Mayor and Council Members, the City Council meeting was adjourned.
