If you live in an area that gets very hot and dry, you’re likely used to having to be careful about how and when you use water around your house or other property. But as droughts become even more of an issue for a lot of the world, it’s time to become even more aggressive about reducing your use of freshwater.
To help you see how you can do this, here are three ways to be smart with your water when living in a hot, dry climate.
Conserve All The Water You Can
The most important thing you should think about when using water in and around your house is how you can conserve the greatest amount of water. While this might not always be convenient, if everyone took these kinds of measures, there would be far fewer issues ensuring that water sources were sufficient.
Inside of your home, do things like fixing any leaking faucets that you might have, taking shorter showers, and not running the sink when doing things like washing dishes or brushing your teeth. As for the property around your house, consider doing things like changing to a more low-maintenance landscaping and watering at very specific times of the day when evaporation will be at its lowest level.
Make Use Of Greywater And Rainwater
Another thing you should think about when trying to conserve water is being careful about every drop of water that goes down the drains of your house.
Rather than having water just go down the drain, consider how you could use this water for other purposes. If you use water to wash off produce or cook pasta, you could reuse that water for watering your garden or rinsing off something outside. And when it rains in your area, which might not be often, consider using a cistern to collect that rain water so that you can use it for other purposes around your yard later.
Be Careful When Using Outdoor Hoses
When you do have to use water outside, you should try to be very careful about how you use your hoses to direct that flow of water.
If you don’t already have a hose that allows you to easily stop the flow of water when you don’t actively need it, consider making this purchase. You can also get fixtures that cut down on how much water comes out of your hose so that you’re not using more water than you need to for any specific task.
If you’re worried about how much water you’re using while living in a dry, hot climate, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you find ways to conserve and make the most of the water you do have to use.
