Katy ISD Announces Screening Deadline for Gifted and Talented Elementary Students

By George Slaughter

The Katy Independent School District’s Gifted and Talented, or GT, program will soon be screening for students who want to apply for that program.

The district said in a news release that the GT program for elementary students consists of a one-day pullout in the Challenge classroom with a teacher trained in gifted education.

Beginning Oct. 12, Katy ISD students in grades 1-4 can be referred for screening for the 2022-2023 gifted and talented program. Parents must complete a parent observation checklist, which can be obtained either from the student’s school or from the Katy ISD website.

To submit an online form, parents may contact the campus Challenge teacher. Katy Virtual Academy parents will receive an e-mail with a link to submit an online form.

The deadline for completing and returning the parent checklist for students in grades 1-4 is Oct. 29. Checklists not returned by the deadline will not be screened for service for the 2022-23 school year.

A GT Awareness presentation for parents of students in grades 1-4 will be available on the Katy ISD Gifted and Talented website Oct. 19.

Transfer students who were screened in Fall 2021, and not identified for GT services, must wait one full academic year before they can be rescreened.

Parents wishing more information may contact campus counselors, elementary Challenge teachers, or GT facilitators. Elementary and secondary parent checklists may be found on the Katy ISD GT and Advanced Academics webpage.
