How To Become A Personal Trainer: 6 Tips To Success

It takes time, patience, and discipline to create a successful career as a Personal Trainer. There are many steps to take to protect your health, maintain your certifications, find paying clients that fit into your schedule, and finally start earning an income- at least enough money to live on. But if you’re willing for the challenge of becoming a Personal Trainer and following these 6 tips, you’ll be well on your way!

  1. Research Your Certifications

Before investing too much time or money into becoming a Personal Trainer, research what certifications will be necessary for where you want to work. The more specialized the certification the better! And don’t forget that some certifications are only valid for a few years. So do your research! You will want to get the best PT certification to begin your career as a personal trainer. With the right certificate,  you can get a job in corporate health clubs or even work at a Crossfit.

  1. Don’t Underestimate Education

The more education you have, the better off you’ll be as a Personal Trainer. Not only will it make clients feel comfortable knowing that their trainer possesses some level of knowledge, but it also will open up more opportunities for employment and pay rate.

  1. Be Disciplined & Consistent

Being responsible is one of the most important factors to being successful at any job- including being a Personal Trainer. If you’re not disciplined, then new client appointments won’t get scheduled or new certifications won’t be completed on time. And if you’re not consistent with updating your site with current information and working out regularly, then you’ll have a difficult time finding clients.

Personal training is a career that is all about who you know and who knows you, so it’s important to stay in touch with everyone in the industry. Connect with other personal trainers on social media, join local PT communities, and keep up-to-date with current information by following fitness websites and publications. You should also seek out conferences and webinars to learn from professionals in the field. If you are not able to attend an event, check out videos on YouTube for more knowledge! New things come out every year, so staying focused will give you the upper hand over your competition when looking for jobs.

  1. Create A Website

One of the best ways to advertise yourself as a Personal Trainer is by creating an online presence- whether that’s through Facebook, Twitter, or your own website. Not only does this help potential clients find you, but it also shows potential employers that you are serious about your work and helps your credibility increase faster among other trainers. Building your website is not as hard as you might think. Many website builders make it easy to create a website or blog page, even if you don’t know how to code. When you set up your website, make sure to include your professional photo, short bio, training services you offer, any certifications you have, endorsements from other trainers or sports teams/athletes you train with, and testimonials from previous clients.

  1. Network & Promote Yourself

How many fitness professionals do you know? Start getting to know them! It might be beneficial to offer free services in exchange for their support- such as doing the same workout with them or helping out at one of their group classes if they’re willing to put up an ad on their social media pages to help you promote your services. And finally, keep track of how many people follow you on social media or find out who has visited your website through Google Analytics. Maybe try giving away a free t-shirt if someone visits your site from another country!

  1. Create A Business Plan

Developing a business plan is an excellent way to organize all your needs and wants for creating a successful Personal Training career. This will also seriously impress potential employers and show that you’re serious about succeeding in the fitness industry. It can be as simple as listing all the benefits of starting, running, and maintaining a Personal Training business – including what certifications are necessary for your location, along with how much money should be expected to invest initially (and on an ongoing basis).

Becoming a personal trainer is hard work. But if you follow these 6 tips, it will be much easier! Stay disciplined and consistent with updating info about yourself online through social media sites or creating/maintaining websites of your own so potential employers know who they’re hiring. Networking can also help increase your clientele, as well as your credibility among fellow fitness professionals. And finally, creating a business plan will better organize all you need to start, maintain and succeed in your Personal Training career!
