How to structure a descriptive essay

Descriptive essays are used for describing ideas, items or topics in detail. The aim of the writer is to paint a vivid picture in the mind of the reader. Descriptive essay writing aims to stimulate the senses of the audience, be it touch, hearing, taste, smell and even the imagination. It is a technique used by so many famous authors, the ability to make you feel like you are part of the plot by using only words. Appealing to the senses and mind of the reader is the sole aim of descriptive writing.

Now essay structures may vary depending the type of essay you are writing but basically a descriptive essay has a basic structure which consists of three parts: The introduction, The body and The conclusion. These are the three fundamental parts of any essay.

These three sections are usually separated by paragraphs. If you ever get to buy essays  from a custom writing service, do well to notice the way the paper is laid out and the  structure of the work.

The introduction

First impressions matter even in essay writing. From the moment a reader, instructor or professor picks up your work and starts reading, he subconsciously performs an assessment of your work right from the very first sentence, so it will be in your best interest to put your best foot forward when starting up on your essay.

Your introduction must be firm, clearly set out the terms and do not beat about the bush.

The opening paragraph of your essay should introduce the topic to the reader. Following should be information on what you will be describing and its importance, state the significance of the item you are describing  this way the reader knows what to expect in the coming paragraphs.

Next should be your thesis. The thesis of your descriptive essay should be short and precise. It should include the subject of your description, and why you are describing it.

Body paragraphs

Each body paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that gives the audience an idea of what to expect from the paragraph. Aim to be concise, delivering each point as specifically as possible backed with facts and evidence, this would make more of an impression rather than generalisations. The body of your essay should have at least three paragraphs.

It is usually best to make each paragraph a representation of a point. So for each point you choose to make it should have its own paragraph where you can elaborately explain and give out details. Doing this makes your work much cleaner and easier to follow, do not forget to always reference these sources of information in your essay.

To make the best descriptive essay, liven it with detail, do not tell, show. If you are describing a scene let the audience be able not just to picture it, but also feel the atmosphere, the mood, let them feel like they are part of the story. Detailed information will leave a print on the reader’s mind.

The conclusion

This is the last part of your essay, every well structured must have one. Usually a paragraph is enough but if the topic happens to be a lengthy one then two or more paragraphs are allowed as long as you are within the word count.

The purpose of the conclusion is to restate your answer to the essay topic and also summarise the main points that you have given. You also get to insert a final statement, something the reader can think on. Be creative and be concise and make sure not to introduce any new information
