Stay cool this summer with these top tips

The hot months are nearly over, right? Wrong. Don’t forget how sticky and stifling the August and September months can be.

When we’re bustling around and rushing from A to B it can be difficult to regulate body temperature and keep cool, especially when the sun is beating down outside. The following tips will help you to stay cool this summer and manage the heat.

AC

We all know the importance of a properly operating AC unit. When it works, your house will feel refreshing and cool, with an evenly regulated temperature throughout. However, AC units are known to be unreliable (thermostat not working? This could cause problems – click the link for a solution), so it’s important to ensure that everything is in full working order. Stay cool this summer by taking the time to ensure it works.

Blinds

While you might like to look out at the glorious weather in the summer months, you’re better off using blinds, shutters or curtains in the daytime to keep the sunshine out. UV rays are extremely powerful and can easily heat up concrete walls or floors. Sitting at a sunny window can quickly make you feel hot and bothered – and you’re at risk of sunburn. So, invest in some attractive, good quality window treatments.

Cooling towels

Cooling towels are a great hack and can be purchased from most grocery stores. A cooling towel differs from a regular towel as it is made from a technical fabric that instantly cools you. All you must do is immerse the towel in water, wring it and then wave it in the air to activate the cooling technology. Wear it around your neck, head or on your legs for an instant cooling effect.

Cotton

What you wear is important in the summer months. Dark colors will make you warmer as they absorb more heat. But the material counts, too. Cotton cools you down more than any other natural material, as it’s breathable and allows heat to escape the body. Thicker, heavier materials such as wool or denim trap the heat more – and acrylic will have you sweating buckets. So, cotton is the way forward.

Portable fan

When you’re hot and bothered, look no further than the trusty fan. While larger fans are great for working from home or getting a cool night’s sleep, portable fans are great when you’re on the go. Keep one in your bag for unexpected sweats and feel instant cooling relief. They’re essential when sitting on the subway or waiting in line at the grocery store.

Water

We need to drink water all year round, but it’s especially important in the summer months. Not only will water keep you hydrated when you’re sweating more than normal, but an ice-cold glass will also reduce your body temperature. So, keep a bottle in your bag and stay hydrated.
