Sens. Cruz, Graham, Rep. Cheney Applaud Trump Administration Decision to End Civil Nuclear Waiver for Iran’s Fordow Nuclear Bunker

‘The administration should now end the waivers for the remaining projects related to the deal, especially the Arak reactor’

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), member of the House Armed Services Committee, today released the following statement applauding the Trump administration for announcing the end of the Fordow civil nuclear waiver for Iran:

“We applaud President Trump and Secretary of State Pompeo for today’s news that the Trump administration will finally end the waiver for civil nuclear work at Iran’s Fordow facility, which was dug out of the side of a mountain to build nuclear weapons. Ending this waiver is another important step in tearing up the catastrophic-Obama Iran nuclear deal once and for all. The administration should now end the waivers for the remaining projects related to the deal, especially the Arak reactor, Iran’s heavy water reactor. There is no justification for extending that waiver in light of recent confirmation that Iran is violating its heavy water obligations, let alone for letting Iran continue to build up its program – not at Fordow, and not at Arak. We will continue to urge the administration to stop issuing all civil-nuclear waivers and call on our colleagues to expeditiously take up our legislation, end these waivers, and hold Iran accountable.”

Sens. Cruz, Graham, and Rep. Cheney have repeatedly urged President Trump to maintain his maximum pressure campaign on Iran and revoke the civil nuclear waivers. Last week, the members introduced a bill requiring the administration to revoke civil nuclear waivers for projects established under the catastrophic Obama-Iran nuclear deal that have allowed Iran to continue building up its nuclear program.

Earlier this month, after Iran announced it would begin injecting uranium gas into centrifuges at the Fordow nuclear bunker, the members released a joint statement urging President Trump to end the civil nuclear waivers and invoke the United Nations snapback to restore international sanctions and restrictions on Iran.
