Sen. Cruz Issues Statement on the Political Crisis in Sudan

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), member of the Senate Foreign Relations’ Subcommittee on Africa and Global Health, issued the following statement in response to reports that Omar al-Bashir has been forced out of power in Sudan:

“The people of Sudan have suffered under the tyranny of the Omar al-Bashir regime for three decades, as the regime abused human rights, committed war crimes, suppressed political dissent, oppressed religious minorities, and exploited Sudan’s wealth to support terrorism around the globe. Dozens have died protesting the regime’s oppression in just the last few days. It is now incumbent upon Sudan’s military to heed the voices of protestors and end all violence against them, and to immediately begin a democratic transition in which power is returned to the Sudanese people. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Senate to provide the people of Sudan the resources they need to ensure a peaceful transition.”
