KATY [May 22, 2018] – The breathtaking masterpieces of two Katy Independent School District students will soon be on display in Washington D.C., as part of the annual Congressional Art Competition. Congressman John Culberson announced that Taylor High School student Soah Kim’s drawing, Girl with Boots, was the overall winner from his district. She will receive two complimentary airfare tickets to Washington D.C. to view her work on display at the U.S. Capitol. Congressman Pete Olson awarded Tompkins High School Mya Stalnaker and her painting Sequined Sweetheart the first runner-up recognition. Her creation will be hung in Olson’s D.C. office for a year.
Kevina Seo, from Taylor High School won second place for her painting titled Horse rider with Texas Flag. Her picture will be framed and hung in Congressman Culberson’s D.C. office for one year. Additionally, Cinco Ranch High student Phuongthy Tran’s Goatee piece was third runner up and his piece will be part of Pete Olson’s Sugar Land office for an entire year.
“It’s through these artistic pieces that our Katy ISD students can explore the connection between art and storytelling,” said Assistant Director of Fine Arts Mitzi Jones. “The classic creations of our students are not just stunning, they engage viewers to interpret and create narratives,” added Jones.
The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the talents of their young constituents. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition.
