Senior Citizen of the Year for Katy

Sibyl (Clapham) Westenhaver was born and raised in Western Oklahoma and graduated from Seiling High School in 1948. Sibyl attended two years of college at Southwestern State in Weatherford, Oklahoma.

Sibyl and Nevin Westenhaver met during their senior year in high school and were married in 1950. They worked and lived in several states from California to Florida and north to Wyoming and Michigan, finally arriving in San Antonio in 1975 and settling in Boerne.

After the death of her husband, she made the decision to move to the Katy area to be close to their two children and their families and has been here for 15 years. The first few years after moving to Katy, Sibyl would go back to Boerne every four to six weeks to spend time with her Mother-in-Law who was living in a nursing home.

In 2006 Sibyl started volunteering to deliver meals for Home Delivered Meals, which is sponsored by First United Methodist Church in Katy. She started just delivering meals one a day, but soon progressed to Sibyl being in charge of the drivers for Thursday’s deliveries. After a couple of years she became the assistant coordinator for the Meals on Wheels Program.

In the latter part of 2015, Home Delivered Meals decided to join with Interfaith Ministries for greater Houston Meals on Wheels. Sibyl helped facilitate this change from First United Methodist Church to Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston. To this day, Sibyl continues to help with the meal deliveries one day each week.

Sibyl also volunteered for the Katy AARP as secretary for three years and as a hostess for several years. She also served on the City of Katy Senior Citizens Center Advisory Board for 11 years, taking turns with other members serving as either the Chair or Secretary.

Sibyl was honored at a reception honoring her as the 2017 Senior Citizen of the Year at the Fussell Senior Center on May 22nd. There was also a special presentation following the reception at the City Council meeting.
