Houston Workforce Expert Rises To National Prominence

Mark Guthrie, Chairman of the Gulf Coast Workforce Board, has been appointed to the Board of the National Association of Workforce Boards. The National Association of Workforce Boards, based in Washington D.C., represents approximately 600 state and local Workforce Development Boards and their 12,000+ business members. It plays vital roles in advising policy makers in Washington about how to meet the needs of the nation’s economy through business, government, labor, and educational initiatives and in educating local workforce board members.

“This is a major win for our entire region. Mark has been a true champion for more and better jobs, higher incomes, a more competitive business environment, and an educated and trained workforce prepared to meet the needs of employers,” said Mike Temple, Executive Director of the Gulf Coast Chapter of the Texas Workforce Board.

Guthrie, a leading legal expert in the field of Construction Law and shareholder at Winstead PC, is the current Chairman of the Gulf Coast Workforce Board, and has served as a member of the Board for 20 years. In addition to his legal practice and commitments to the regional workforce, Guthrie also serves as a passionate advocate for adult literacy, education and vocational rehabilitation programs.

“We are very excited to have Mr. Guthrie serve on our national Board. He personally brings such an extensive body of knowledge and a clear dedication to helping employers and employees thrive. In addition, he comes from a great local workforce development board, Gulf Coast, so he understands that great work can happen locally when innovation is the focus, and solid business leadership is present,” said Ronald Painter, President and CEO of the National Association of Workforce Boards.

“It gives me tremendous satisfaction to see employers getting the talent they need to grow and prosper and people engaged in rewarding, well-paying careers. We’ve done a great job pursuing that goal here in the Gulf Coast region, and I look forward to taking what I’ve learned here and helping apply it to the nation” said Mr. Guthrie.

Guthrie concluded, “During 2016, our Workforce Solutions served more than 400,000 people and 25,000 employers in the region – just imagine the impact of the public workforce system across the country.”
