Among those representing the various entities were Ali Dodson, Advancement Director for Katy Prairie Conservancy and Andy Wohlgemuth, Community and Social Media Coordinator for Bass Pro Shops.

Dodson noted that prairie and wetlands restoration is important for the wildlife in the area, providing rich habitat for resident and migratory waterfowl.  But just as important is what it does for people. The EPA estimates that one wetland acre can store between 1 and 1.5 million gallons of water, helping to hold or slow floodwaters during storms.

“Prairie grasses absorb and hold floodwaters back from downstream and wetlands filter water and improve water quality,” says Dodson.  “Financial support from generous partners like Bass Pro Shops allows us to leverage other philanthropic dollars and complete essential restoration projects on the Katy Prairie Conservancy’s lands.”

A number of different restoration projects are on-going, helping to ensure that present and future generations have healthier land and healthier watersheds.

About Katy Prairie Conservancy

The Katy Prairie Conservancy is a nonprofit land trust dedicated to preserving the coastal prairie for people and wildlife. For Houston, the Katy Prairie Preserve is the right prairie in the right place.  These protected lands west of the city play an important role in flood control, outdoor recreation, and wildlife habitat. But there is still prairie that remains unprotected. Our work is not done.
