St. John XXIII Student Earns Perfect Score on National Latin Exam

St. John XXIII College Preparatory Principal, Mr. Tim Gallic, is pleased to announce freshman Cate Silas earned a perfect score on the recent National Latin Exam. The National Latin Exam is a third-party organization designed to assess competency in each Latin Level. Individual awards are dependent upon the student’s performance in relation to the performance from all the test submissions for that particular level across the nation.

Last month, all St. John XXIII Latin students took the National Latin Exam. Of the 33 students who sat for the exam, 18 received awards, with nine students receiving the highest award of Gold Medal, and one of these was a perfect score attributed to Silas.

Jason Alleman, a first year St. John XXXIII Latin and theology teacher stated, “Ever since the beginning of school this year, I’ve been attempting to utilize the National Latin Exam (NLE) as a way to get our Latin students hyped and excited about succeeding in all our learning goals for each level of Latin, and ultimately as an opportunity to showcase the incredible effort put forth by our Latin students this

year.  I’m very proud of the great strides taken by each Latin student enrolled in the program, and I’m ecstatic that our students performed so well on such a challenging assessment.”

The philosophy of the National Latin Exam (NEL) is predicated on providing every Latin student the opportunity to experience a sense of personal accomplishment and success in his study of the Latin language and culture. This opportunity exists for each individual student since, on the National Latin Exam, he is not competing with his fellow student on a comparative basis but is evaluated solely on his own performance on the exam. The basic purposes of the NLE are to promote the study of Latin and to encourage the individual student. For more information, please visit the National Latin Exam website, nle.org.
