Discover Texas Freedom Colonies And Their Untold Stories In Your Area

The stories of more than 500 Texas communities established by freed African-Americans after the abolition of slavery are waiting to be told, many for the first time, as the result of years of research by Texas A&M University urban planning professor Andrea Roberts.

With Black History Month quickly approaching, you can find the freedom colonies nearest you on an interactive map located on the Texas Freedom Colonies Project website and begin telling the stories of these all-black, self-sufficient settlements.

“History, among other things, is at stake here,” Roberts said. “We want children to know that creating freedom colonies is part of what it means to be Texan, and that African-Americans are part and parcel of all of Texas.”
