Katy Triathlon Broadens Appeal With New Race Categories, Return of Pre-Race Party

KATY, TX (August 15, 2018) – Organizers of the Katy Triathlon are introducing two new race categories and the return of a pre-race party in an effort to broaden the appeal of the annual event slated for Sunday, September 23.

Now in its new home in Katy’s Cane Island, the Katy Triathlon/Duathlon/Aquabike will incorporate a two-stage aquabike race (500-meter swim followed by a 15-mile bike ride) and a three-stage duathlon (three-mile run followed by a 15-mile bike ride and three-mile run).

“The new events give individuals who may not be up for a triathlon the opportunity to compete in shorter and different two-sport races,” says Paul Kurt, co-chair of the 26th annual race presented by the Rotary Club of Katy.

The triathlon course features a 500-meter swim followed by a 15-mile bike ride and a three-mile run.

“We’re seeing quite a bit of interest in the new events,” adds Kurt.  “Those of all ages are excited about the opportunity to come out and participate while raising money for a great cause.”

Proceeds from registration fees for the 2018 Katy Triathlon/Duathlon/Aquabike will benefit need-based and character scholarships for graduating Katy ISD seniors.  Since its inception, the event has funded more than $300,000 in scholarships and $175,000 for an endowment for the Katy ISD’s dual-credit program.

This year’s event also marks the return of a pre-race party to be held Saturday, September 22 in the Cane Island Amenity Village, 2100 Cane Island Parkway.

From 3 p.m. – 6 p.m., those registered for the triathlon, duathlon or aquabike race can bring up to three guests for a free salad-and-pasta dinner along with beer, live music and inflatables for the kids.  Race packets also will be available for pick up on Saturday, September 22 from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. in the Cane Island Amenity Village.

“We have this beautiful setting in Cane Island so it just made sense to bring the pre-race party back,” says Kurt.  “It’s a chance for participants and their families to unwind, have fun and toast to their success the next morning,”
