KATY [August 14, 2018] – Looking for a good story idea for the first day of school? Look no further. Katy Independent School District will be making history on Wednesday, August 15 with the opening of Campbell Elementary School and the re-opening of Creech Elementary, which was devastated by Hurricane Harvey.  Here’s a synopsis of what you can find at both campuses:

Creech Elementary – After sustaining at least two feet of flood water on August 2017, hundreds of Creech Elementary students and staff members not only lost their homes, but they also lost their school.   In three days, the entire student body, along with the administration, was moved to a nearby U of H satellite campus which was 1/3 the size of Creech Elementary. .  Teachers and staff members taught for an entire year at what soon became known as “Creech University”, a college campus occupied by elementary students.  The resilience of students and staff members became a testament to the Katy Strong spirit.  Meanwhile, their campus was being gutted out and repaired, a process that took countless hours of hard work.  Now it’s time to head back home!  Creech Comets are shining brighter than ever and what a great opportunity to capture the closure of one tough chapter in the lives of students and staff members and the beginning of a new story at their newly renovated school.  Available interviewees: Euberta Lucas, Principal of Creech Elementary and parents along with children arriving to the school.

Campbell Elementary – As families continue to move westward, Katy ISD proudly announces that it will be opening its 41st elementary school.  The new campus proudly displays the name of Amy Campbell, a living legacy and former educator who dedicated 33 years of her life to the students at Katy ISD.  Campbell Elementary was designed with the future generations of students in mind.  The state-of-the-art building includes cutting-edge technology, collaborative learning spaces and the most comprehensive safety features. .
