“Story of the Thirsty” Water Walk

Our world and our bodies consist mostly of water; it’s a resource that’s readily accessible to us. And yet, this seemingly inexhaustible liquid we all take for granted is beyond reach for more than 800 million people around the world.

That’s why, on Saturday, May 5, Houston-based Living Water International will host its annual 5k race, where hundreds of area residents and their families can come out to celebrate World Water Day and learn more about the global water crisis.

The event will also feature the “Story of the Thirsty” Water Walk, a free, interactive, educational event that gives children and their families a chance to experience a simulated journey through a jungle, as if they were on a walk to collect water. Along the way, walkers will try to fill up their water container as they encounter various obstacles and learn facts about children living in communities around the world that lack proper hygiene, sanitation, or clean water.

WHAT:

  • More than 840,000 people worldwide are estimated to die each year due to unsafe drinking-water, poor sanitation, and hygiene.
  • Around the globe, women and children are estimated to spend 200 million hours every daycollecting water for their families, often from open sources that are contaminated.
  • Living Water International, a 28-year-old clean water well drilling organization is providing a way for Houston-area residents to help transform communities around the worldthrough the World Water Day 5k and “Story of the Thirsty” Water Walk.
  • This year’s 5k will raise money for a new drill rig in Sierra Leone.
