Morton Ranch and Tompkins battle for fourth spot

Tom Behrens: Next week marks the end of the basketball season for the girls. Bi-district playoff games begin Feb. 12. Presently Seven Lakes, Katy, Taylor have locks on the top three positions in the district. Tompkins and Morton Ranch are battling it out for the fourth playoff spot.

Tompkins was smoked by Katy, 57-26 as the Lady Tigers ruled the boards, 68-34. Morton Ranch held on for a hard fought one point win over Taylor, 61-60

Tompkins plays Taylor in their last game of the regular season. Morton Ranch has games with  Cinco Ranch and Seven Lakes. Based only on won-lost records, the Lady Mavericks should have no problems with Cinco. The question is whether the Morton Ranch girls can pull off another big win, this time against Seven Lakes.

“It looks like it’s going to be a tight race between Tompkins and us,” said Maverick Head Coach, Kisha Jones. “If things work out a certain way we may have to play a playoff game between us to get into the playoffs.”

Jones said knew just how important the game with Taylor was to them. “If we lost that game, it probably would be impossible for us to get into the playoffs. We had high intensity, rebounded the ball well.

“We played them earlier at our place and only lost by seven points (28-21),” continued Jones. “We are going to have to win this time.”

Jones said she had nine players who saw time on the court. This year the Mavericks are well balanced, no one really sticks out. “Everyone is doing their best. In any different game one may score more than the other.”

Nine girls make up the roster for the Mavericks; Seven are seniors—Hannah Rivero, Samantha Washburn, Misaya Martin, Bailey Ferguson, Jasmaine Anthony Valdez, Ashley Chacon and Latavia Patten.

“We had two girls move in (from other schools) and two are sophomores. Early in the year we struggled, but now it’s all coming together at the right time.”

Seven Lakes lone district loss was inflicted by Katy. The Lady Spartans will have Mayde Creek on their schedule before their final game with Morton Ranch.

Tompkins has a final game with Taylor who will be out to win after their shocking loss to Morton Ranch.
