J Teen Art Scene – Get Your Art On

Houston, TX – Evelyn Rubenstein JCC of Houston is calling for submissions for the J Teen Art Scene. The 9th annual J Teen Art Scene exhibit showcases art of Jewish teens ages 13-18. The theme this year is CommUNITY. Artists’ submissions should reflect the ways in which the teens contribute to the community and have helped unite people.

(L to R) Rachel Buxbaum, Asher Siegel and Ely German serve on the J Teen Art Scene Student Committee.

Each year, this teen-led event aspires to include a broad range of Jewish teens from all schools, synagogues and youth groups. The student committee is comprised of 5 teens from several different schools: Brady Brazda (11th grade at Kinkaid), Rachel Buxbaum (10th grade at Emery/Weiner School), Ely German (12th grade Emery/Weiner School), Ellie Gershenwald (12th grade at St. John’s School), and Asher Siegel (10th grade at Emery/Weiner School).

“Last year was my first year submitting to an art competition; before that I had just done art for myself,” said Rachel Buxbaum. “Once I submitted and I got there, I realized that art really did matter to me and I wanted to share my passion with other people. I want other teens see the value in sharing their art and to help them see that it was something they could bond over.”

Submissions can be either visual or performing art of all types, including photography, painting, sculpture, music, fashion, drama and spoken word. Teens can also submit recipes to be included in a cookbook and apply to participate in a culinary workshop organized by Laykie, of Café at the J, which will provide refreshments during the event.

“I enjoyed making a ceramic piece last year. And even though I learned I’m not good at painting, I still have an artistic point of view, which involves working with my hands,” said Brady Brazda.

The Grand Opening Showcase of the J Teen Art Scene is February 25, 2018. The deadline to submit work is January 16, 2018. Complete guidelines can be found at www.erjcchouston.org.
