Lieutenant Governor candidate Scott Milder resigns from Friends of Texas Public Schools board after 13 years at the helm

(AUSTIN, TX) — Friends of Texas Public Schools has announced that its founder, Scott Milder, has resigned as CEO and board member effective November 22, 2017. Mr. Milder’s resignation was accepted by the Board of Directors.

In his statement, Scott said, “Leslie and I started Friends of Texas Public Schools over 13 years ago because we were tired of the incessant, mean-spirited debate about our schools with little if any recognition for the great things that happen every day. Educators should be revered and respected as heroes serving our state and nation in the same light as our military and first responders. They are saving lives every single day in every single classroom and school across our great state. No matter our differences over the issues, they should be debated with the highest respect for those who choose to serve in our schools.

“Friends of Texas Public Schools is a 501c(3) non-profit organization that has remained true to its status since 2004 by steering clear of supporting or opposing candidates and legislation,” Milder added. “For this reason, and to protect the organization from politics, I am resigning my seat on the board to separate my run for Lieutenant Governor from the work of Friends of Texas Public Schools. The organization will continue its work and broaden its influence through the very capable hands of its passionate and committed board members and staff.”

Blake Cooper, executive director of Friends of Texas Public Schools, said he will do his best to honor Leslie and Scott’s vision for the organization. “Scott’s passion for public education will continue to be at the center of all we do at Friends. We will continue to defend public schools and know Scott will do the same in whatever role the future holds for him.”

We believe the people of Texas have a right to know that, in spite of the many challenges they face, our public schools are achieving more today than ever in their history, and that the incessant, negative and oftentimes disrespectful conversation about public education is counterproductive to progress.
