McDonald Junior High & Texans Stats Challenge

McDonald Junior High received a visit from former Houston Texan Punt Returner (Texan Ambassador), J.J. Moses, and two Houston Texans Cheerleaders, Gabby and Natalie on Tuesday, November 14th.  McDonald Junior High was selected amongst several campus’ across the Houston-area for this honor as their sixth-grade math teachers; Mrs. Jill Hobbs, Mrs. Katrisa Brown-Willis, and Mrs. Danielle Harris; participated, and engaged their students, in the 2017 Houston Texans Stats Challenge.

The Texans Stats Challenge is a program the Houston Texans and Schlumberger created to partner up with 6th Grade Math Teachers across the Houston-area.  The program is designed to take the statistics from the game of football and correlate it with Texas Education Agency’s 6th grade curriculum – Rational Number Operations, Ordering Rational Numbers, Ratios and Rates, Percentages, Integer Operations and Solving One-Step Equations and One-Step Inequalities.  This program is in its second year and more than 475 teachers registered to administer the program, helping to reach 51,000 Houston-area sixth grade students.

McDonald Junior High’s sixth-graders were very excited to be a part of this program as they learned that math is very important even in the sport of football.  They learned how analytics plays a role in sports.  For example, if the Houston Texans opposing teams quarterback gets sacked 4 times during a game and loses 7.6 yards on average they would use integer operations to solve this (-7.6)(4) = -30.4 yards.  This is a huge advantage for the Houston Texans.

During the assembly, Moses asked the students how the Texans Stats Challenge helped them in learning math.  Many students responded similarly as they said they understood integers as well as ratios better since it correlates to real world situations like football.  Many boys have shared that they want to be professional football players now and of course many girls want to be a Texans Cheerleader.  The assembly was a huge success for McDonald Junior High and we are glad to have opportunities like this to participate in.

GO TEXANS!!
