Announcing New Dementia Caregiver Class and Memory Café  in Katy

Amazing Place, Houston’s only day program for adults with mild to moderate dementia, has announced it will be offering the six-week Powerful Tools for Caregivers course starting Wednesdays, September 6 through October 11th, from 9:30-11:30am at Grand Lakes Presbyterian Church, 6035 S. Fry Road in Katy.  The class will help those caring for those with dementia to learn how to reduce stress, communicate more effectively with family and doctors, reduce guilt, anger and depression and  practice self-care.  The class will be co-led by Rev. Tommy Thompson of Bethany Christian Church and Susan Giles, Amazing Place Community and Church Liaison.  There is a $25 fee for “The Caregiver Helpbook” and registration is required.  Contact Susan Giles at 713.552.0420 or sgiles@amazingplacehouston.org for more information.

In addition, the Memory Café–a place for those with early stage dementia and their caregivers to join others for coffee, conversation and activities–will open in Katy from 10-11:30am on the third Saturday of each month starting in October.  . Research has shown the benefits of stimulation and socialization for those in the early stages of dementia.  In addition, caregivers benefit from seeing they are not alone.
