Houston Methodist West Hospital celebrates Cancer Survivors

HOUSTON—(June 8, 2017)—Each year, the first Sunday in June is a worldwide Celebration of Life that marks National Cancer Survivors Day. Houston Methodist West Hospital hosted its seventh annual National Cancer Survivors Day program with this year’s theme of “Healing through Art.”

“We want to celebrate cancer survivors every day,” said Kim Collins, director of the Houston Methodist Cancer Center at West. “And our event is just another opportunity to let cancer survivors know how courageous and strong they really are.”

According to the National Cancer Survivors Day organization, thanks to advances in cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, and follow-up care, more people than ever before are surviving the disease. In America alone, more than 15.5 million people are alive today after being diagnosed with cancer.

More than 90 survivors and caregivers, all with their own unique cancer journeys, registered for this community event. The celebration featured a painting demonstration by Miss Houston 2015 Chyna Wheatley, who also shared words of healing and encouragement with attendees. The event included music by Brian De Los Santos, a Houston Methodist West employee, along with survivor testimonials and recognition of the all patient caregivers who attended the event.

“Caregivers often attend doctor visits with their loved one, coordinate meals and provide emotional and sometimes financial support,” said Collins. “We must acknowledge caregivers and how important they are in the life and survivorship of a cancer patient.”

A cancer survivor’s journey doesn’t end after treatment. Survivorship means ensuring that the patient knows the importance of follow-up doctor visits and living a healthy lifestyle, including diet and physical activity.

Houston Methodist Cancer Center at West provides services that range from prevention and diagnosis to advanced treatments. It also offers second opinions, clinical trials, genetic testing and support groups, all at a location conveniently close to home.
