Established in 1999, National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is a creative-writing project designed to empower and inspire vibrant creativity among aspiring writers, who are encouraged to write 50,000 words of a novel in the 30 days of November. Throughout the month, Fort Bend County Libraries will host programs intended to encourage new writers by providing tips and tricks, writing and publishing advice, and support from other aspiring novelists. The Story Spinners Writing Club, which normally meets once a month at George Memorial Library in Richmond, will meet weekly on Thursdays, November 2, 9, 16, and 30, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. The topics will be “Beginnings,” “Ambiance,” “Action,” and “Plot Holes.” From beginning blogger to published novelist, writers of all genres and experience levels are welcome to join the Story Spinners Writing Club to write, share, learn, support, network, and critique each other’s work. Write-ins – informal gatherings where novice writers can network with each other for encouragement and inspiration – are scheduled on Mondays, November 6, 13, 20, and 27, at two locations: George Memorial Library in Richmond from 5:30 to 8:30 pm, and at the Sienna Branch Library from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Join fellow writers for quiet writing time, word sprints, and feedback. The “Prose Pros Writing Group” at the Cinco Ranch Branch Library will have a demonstration of the features and tools available in FBCL’s Online Writers’ Corner on Monday, November 6, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. Those attending will learn about three unique tools – PressBooks Public, the Indie Author Project, and the BiblioBoard Library – that enable writers, as well as readers, to create, publish, and discover digital content made by and for the local community. New writers are encouraged to attend this open meeting. Additional demonstrations of FBCL’s Online Writers’ Corner will take place at the Sugar Land Branch Library (Wednesday, November 15, at 10:30 am; and Thursday, November 16, at 6:30 pm) and at the Mission Bend Branch Library (Wednesday, November 15, at 6:00 pm). Seating is limited at these demonstrations, and registration is required at these locations only. The Missouri City Branch Library will host a “Nothing Too Novel” writing workshop on Saturday, November 11, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Local author KC Lewis will share the basic steps for getting started, from brainstorming, researching, setting goals, and time management, to editing, revision, and publishing. During the workshop's second half, participants will have a chance to exercise these skills and draft their own stories. A resident of Pearland, Lewis is the author of the sci-fi novel Argentum: Recursion. This workshop is made possible by the Friends of the Missouri City Branch Library. Aspiring writers are invited to participate in FBCL’s annual Book Festival on Saturday, November 18, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, at George Memorial Library. The “Writers’ Corner” on FBCL’s website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us) includes three unique tools – PressBooks Public, the Indie Author Project, and the BiblioBoard Library – that enable writers, as well as readers, to create, publish, and discover digital content made by and for the local community. In recognition of National Novel-Writing Month, demonstrations of the “Writers’ Corner” and its features will take place at four locations in November. Cinco Ranch Branch Library -- Monday, November 6, 6:00-7:30 pm, Conference Classroom. In conjunction with the meeting of the library’s Prose Pros Writing Group, library staff will introduce the Writers’ Corner and the basics of self-publishing. Sugar Land Branch Library -- Wednesday, November 15, 10:30 am; Thursday, November 16, 6:30 pm, Tech Center. Library staff will introduce the many online tools and features available for writers on FBCL’s Online Writers’ Corner. Mission Bend Branch Library -- Wednesday, November 15, 6;00-7:00 pm, Computer Lab. Library staff will introduce the many online tools and features available for writers. George Memorial Library (Richmond) -- Saturday, November 18, 10:30-11:30 am, Computer Lab. In conjunction with FBCL’s Annual Book Fest, Biblioboard representative Emily Gooding will demonstrate how aspiring writers can publish an ebook for free – with a library card – using the services available in the “Writers’ Corner.” The first instrument in the suite of resources – PressBooks Public – is a digital self-publishing tool designed to help aspiring writers easily create their own professional-quality print-ready and ebook files that can be distributed commercially or shared in FBCL’s Writers’ Corner. Users have unlimited access to this resource, which requires no previous design or tech experience. Writers can choose from a variety of premade design templates to instantly give their book a professional layout. The author maintains complete ownership of any and all book files created using PressBooks Public, and they can publish or distribute those files however they choose. The second tool is the Indie Author Project. This resource gives local writers the opportunity to submit ebooks for inclusion in the BiblioBoard Library collection in FBCL’s Writers’ Corner. As part of a partnership with Library Journal, this resource also offers the potential for inclusion in the royalty-paying Indie Author Project Select collections available at libraries all across the U.S. and Canada. Books that are not selected for Library Journal’s Indie Author Project Select collection may still be considered for the Indie Texas collection, which is available to participating libraries around the state. Both avenues help authors to promote their work and gain further exposure, whether it is locally or nationally. The third feature in this suite -- the BiblioBoard Library – will attract the interest of readers who are looking for digital works from self-published authors, top indie ebooks, local collections, and more. Items in this collection are always available, so there is never a waiting list or limit for the number of check-outs. Writers who create works in PressBooks Public and participate in the Indie Author Project will find their ebooks added to the BiblioBoard Library, where they can be enjoyed by the general public. Readers can access the BiblioBoard Library collection through FBCL’s website or by downloading the BiblioBoard Library app for Apple, Android, or Kindle devices. Creating a username and password is required for using the PressBooks Public and BiblioBoard Library features. Having an account enables writers to create and store their works in the PressBooks Public tool, and it allows readers to access the BiblioBoard Library ebook they are reading from locations outside the county, use “bookmarks,” and sync their preferences. The same username and password will accommodate both the PressBooks Public and BiblioBoard Library features. When creating an account, users will select Fort Bend County Libraries and then enter their library-card barcode number. FBCL will then be saved as their preferred library for future access. Family Story Time takes place on Wednesdays and Thursdays, beginning at 10:15 and 11:30 am, in the Meeting Room. Families with children of all ages will enjoy stories, songs, and action rhymes. Craft packets will be given out at the end of each program, so that children may take them home to enjoy. The schedule of Family Story Time activities is as follows: November 1, 2, and 8 – NO PROGRAMS because of elections November 9 – Hair November 15 and 16 – Construction November 22 – Thanksgiving November 23 – LIBRARY CLOSED November 29 and 30 – Dance Party Pajama Night Story Time – an evening alternative for families unable to attend during the day – will take place on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays, from 6:00 to 6:30 pm. Because of elections, this program will NOT take place on November 7 because of elections. The theme on November 21 will be “Thanksgiving.” Family Fun Night will take place on Mondays, November 13 and 27, from 6:00 to 7:00 pm, in the Meeting Room. Families with children of all ages are invited to an evening of games, building challenges, and more. Mother Goose Time – for pre-walking infants from newborn to 12 months of age – takes place on Tuesdays, from 10:15 to 10:45 am. This activity provides caregiver/infant multisensory circle-time activities -- including simple sign language, folksongs and lullabies, and finger plays -- that are especially designed to stimulate babies’ social, emotional, and physical development through rhythm and music. Attendance is limited to 15 infants. This activity will NOT take place on November 7 because of elections. After-School Break: Chess & Go will take place on Wednesday, November 15, from 4:30 to 5:00 pm, in Meeting Room 2. This program is for school-aged children in grades 1 through 5. 10:00 am: “Community Reads” Author Rubén Degollado To Headline Libraries’ Book Festival10:00 am: “Community Reads” Author Rubén Degollado To Headline Libraries’ Book Festival –
The keynote address by Rubén Degollado will take place from 10:30 to 11:30 am, in the Meeting Room of the library. Additional presentations, workshops, and author appearances are planned throughout the event, which will also include a special performance by Ballet Folklorico Herencia Mexicana de Houston. In his author talk, Degollado will read an excerpt from his novel, The Family Izquierdo, released in September 2022. He will talk about how the development of his characters’ unique voices and experiences helps to immerse readers in a specific culture and enables them to understand universal truths, widening their view of the world. The FBCL’s 2023 “Community Reads” selection, The Family Izquierdo is a beautifully-written novel that weaves together the lives of three generations of a tight-knit Tejano family bound by love… and a curse. Told in a series of soulful voices brimming with warmth and humor, The Family Izquierdo is a tender narrative of a multi-generational family at a turning point. Degollado is a longtime educator who lives and writes in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. His fiction has appeared or been featured in Texas Highways, Literary Hub, Bilingual Review/Revista Bilingüe, Beloit Fiction Journal, and elsewhere. His first novel, Throw, won the Texas Institute of Letters Best Young Adult book for 2020. His literary novel, The Family Izquierdo, is a PEN/Faulkner nominee, a Texas Institute of Letters and Writers League of Texas Fiction finalist, and is a long-list title for the Mark Twain American Voice in Literature Award. The Book Festival will also feature several workshops designed to encourage aspiring writers of all ages and genres. Creative and inspiring programs are planned for children as well as adults who dream of becoming published authors. Readers will also have an opportunity to visit with local authors at a meet-and-greet area throughout the event. From 10:30 to 11:30 am, children’s author and creative-writing teacher Valerie Sweeten will present “Exploring Your World: A Kids’ Writing Workshop” for youth in grades 2-5. Children are encouraged to explore their creative side through writing. This program will be presented in Room 2A of the library. Also from 10:30 to 11:30 am, Biblioboard representative Emily Gooding will present “Publish for Free with Your Library Card” in the Computer Lab. Budding writers will learn how to use the free services provided through FBCL’s Online Writers’ Corner -- including Biblioboard Library, the Indie Author Project, and Pressbooks – to get published. A performance by Ballet Folklorico Herencia Mexicana de Houston will take place in the Jodie E. Stavinoha Amphitheater from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. Visitors will be treated to music, dancing, and vibrant costumes from the Huasteca region of Mexico, along with the state of Jalisco. Food trucks will be on hand, and visitors are invited to eat lunch while enjoying the shade of the outdoor amphitheater and the festive atmosphere of this exciting performance. Books by visiting authors will be raffled off during the lunch hour, as well! Following the outdoor entertainment, visitors may return inside for additional presentations or meet some of the local authors who will be on hand for book signings throughout the event. Guest authors -- representing children’s, Young Adult, and adult literature -- include Tonya Duncan Ellis, Raul Herrera, Saborna Roychowdhury, Sherrie Schmidt, Valerie Sweeten, and Robin Winckler. Aspiring writers are invited to attend a writing workshop, “From Idea to Completed Draft Fast,” from 1:00 to 2:00 pm, in Room 2A. Local author Taki Zyngtara will provide tips on overcoming writer’s block, finding inspiration, and staying organized. A regular with the library’s Story Spinner’s Writing Club, Zyngtara has encouraged beginning writers for many years. “A Taste of Latin America” will be presented by Erica Knighton from the Prairie View A&M Cooperative Extension Program, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm, in the Meeting Room. Knighton will demonstrate the preparation of a dish that celebrates and explores the flavors of Latin America. Fort Bend County Libraries’ Book Festival celebrates books, authors, and the importance of literature to the imagination. Users have unlimited access to this resource, which requires no previous design or tech experience. Writers can choose from a variety of premade design templates to instantly give their book a professional layout. The author maintains complete ownership of any and all book files created using PressBooks Public, and they can publish or distribute those files however they choose. The second tool is the Indie Author Project. This resource gives local writers the opportunity to submit ebooks for inclusion in the BiblioBoard Library collection in FBCL’s Writers’ Corner. As part of a partnership with Library Journal, this resource also offers the potential for inclusion in the royalty-paying Indie Author Project Select collections available at libraries all across the U.S. and Canada. Books that are not selected for Library Journal’s Indie Author Project Select collection may still be considered for the Indie Texas collection, which is available to participating libraries around the state. Both avenues help authors to promote their work and gain further exposure, whether it is locally or nationally. The third feature in this suite -- the BiblioBoard Library – will attract the interest of readers who are looking for digital works from self-published authors, top indie ebooks, local collections, and more. Items in this collection are always available, so there is never a waiting list or limit for the number of check-outs. Writers who create works in PressBooks Public and participate in the Indie Author Project will find their ebooks added to the BiblioBoard Library, where they can be enjoyed by the general public. Readers can access the BiblioBoard Library collection through FBCL’s website or by downloading the BiblioBoard Library app for Apple, Android, or Kindle devices. Creating a username and password is required for using the PressBooks Public and BiblioBoard Library features. Having an account enables writers to create and store their works in the PressBooks Public tool, and it allows readers to access the BiblioBoard Library ebook they are reading from locations outside the county, use “bookmarks,” and sync their preferences. When creating an account, users will select Fort Bend County Libraries and then enter their library-card barcode number. FBCL will then be saved as their preferred library for future access. Children are encouraged to explore their creative side through writing. Sweeten will provide several writing prompts and show children how to create short stories by letting their imaginations soar. After the children’s workshop, families will be treated to a performance by Ballet Folklorico Herencia Mexicana de Houston in the Jodie E. Stavinoha Amphitheater from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. As with written words, discover how music, dancing, and vibrant costumes can also be used to relate stories. Costumes and dances from the Huasteca region of Mexico, along with the state of Jalisco, will be featured. Food trucks will be on hand, and families are invited to eat lunch while enjoying the shade of the outdoor amphitheater and the festive atmosphere of this exciting performance. Books by visiting authors will be raffled off during the lunch hour, as well! Following the outdoor entertainment, families may return inside for additional presentations or meet some of the local authors who will be on hand for book signings throughout the event. Guest authors -- representing children’s, Young Adult, and adult literature -- include Tonya Duncan Ellis, Raul Herrera, Saborna Roychowdhury, Sherrie Schmidt, Valerie Sweeten, and Robin Winckler. Tonya Duncan Ellis is the author of the popular, award-winning “Sophie Washington” children’s chapter-book series, as well as They Built Me for Freedom, a children’s book about Juneteenth and Houston’s Emancipation Park. Children’s author and retired schoolteacher Sherrie Schmidt will have copies of her book, The Seashell Safe Harbor, available for sale and signing. Her book, which features a sailboat named Happy, shares the message of finding courage within oneself and recognizing another friend’s need for help. Robin Winckler is a YA (Young Adult) fantasy author with a love for magic, dragons, adventure, and all things high fantasy. She will talk about her book, Of Spellbooks and Thieves (The Legends of Anticuus). Preschool Story Time – Tuesdays, from 10:15 to 11:00 am -- provides stories, movies, and age-appropriate craft activities for children from 3 to 6 years of age. November 14 – Kindness November 21 – Feel-Good Food November 28 – I Love Me (Human Body) Toddler Time – Wednesdays, from 10:15 to 11:00 am -- offers caregiver/child activities, stories, and songs for older babies, from 1 to 3 years of age. Established in 1999, National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is a creative-writing project designed to empower and inspire vibrant creativity among aspiring writers, who are encouraged to write 50,000 words of a novel in the 30 days of November. Throughout the month, Fort Bend County Libraries will host programs intended to encourage new writers by providing tips and tricks, writing and publishing advice, and support from other aspiring novelists. The Story Spinners Writing Club, which normally meets once a month at George Memorial Library in Richmond, will meet weekly on Thursdays, November 2, 9, 16, and 30, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. The topics will be “Beginnings,” “Ambiance,” “Action,” and “Plot Holes.” From beginning blogger to published novelist, writers of all genres and experience levels are welcome to join the Story Spinners Writing Club to write, share, learn, support, network, and critique each other’s work. Write-ins – informal gatherings where novice writers can network with each other for encouragement and inspiration – are scheduled on Mondays, November 6, 13, 20, and 27, at two locations: George Memorial Library in Richmond from 5:30 to 8:30 pm, and at the Sienna Branch Library from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Those attending will learn about three unique tools – PressBooks Public, the Indie Author Project, and the BiblioBoard Library – that enable writers, as well as readers, to create, publish, and discover digital content made by and for the local community. Additional demonstrations of FBCL’s Online Writers’ Corner will take place at the Sugar Land Branch Library (Wednesday, November 15, at 10:30 am; and Thursday, November 16, at 6:30 pm) and at the Mission Bend Branch Library (Wednesday, November 15, at 6:00 pm). The Missouri City Branch Library will host a “Nothing Too Novel” writing workshop on Saturday, November 11, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Local author KC Lewis will share the basic steps for getting started, from brainstorming, researching, setting goals, and time management, to editing, revision, and publishing. During the workshop's second half, participants will have a chance to exercise these skills and draft their own stories. A resident of Pearland, Lewis is the author of the sci-fi novel Argentum: Recursion. This workshop is made possible by the Friends of the Missouri City Branch Library. Aspiring writers are invited to participate in FBCL’s annual Book Festival on Saturday, November 18, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, at George Memorial Library.
