HOUSTON (July 22, 2024) – The University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) may be the second largest university in Houston, but the care and attention it gives its students mirrors that of a much smaller institution. Geared toward first-time college students, The UHD “Get Ready Gators” Summer Bridge Program is a prime example of UHD’s commitment to making sure as many high school seniors have access to an affordable, quality higher education as possible.
UHD’s Summer Bridge is a free, five-week intensive academic college preparation program designed to aid first-year students in strengthening their academic skills and social integration. Importantly, Summer Bridge helps high school seniors transition from high school to university life by providing an engaging and rewarding collegiate experience.
Nineteen recent high school graduates are currently attending UHD’s “Get Ready Gators” Summer Bridge Program, Monday-Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Required to have a minimum GPA of 2.5, these students graduated from KIPP Academy and Harmony Public Schools and Houston, Katy and Fort Bend ISDs. One student moved to Houston from Dallas to attend UHD.
They are earning nine college credits as they engage with faculty in small groups. They are also receiving academic support and mentoring as well as specialized peer support for Math and English to ensure student success.
