Benefits of Having a Laser Rangefinder as a Hunting Accessory and How to Use It

A successful hunt begins by first understanding the distance between you and the target. Being aware of this distance can help you to make more accurate shots. Follow along to understand how a laser rangefinder works, how to use it, and the benefits it offers.

How a Laser Rangefinder Works

This technology makes use of electromagnetic pulses which are emitted by the rangefinders through their optoelectronic systems. The emitted beams are reflected on the surface of the intended target and are cast back to the rangefinder. The laser range finder then goes ahead to analyze the time it takes for the beam to return. With the speed of the beam, the device can calculate the distance to the target.

Benefits of Using a Laser Rangefinder

1.     Frees You from the Guesswork

The use of a laser rangefinder prevents errors caused by guesswork. The main aim of a rangefinder is to calculate and provide accurate distance between you and your target hence allowing for easy and precise shots to be made.

2.     Eliminates the Need to Get Closer

Once you know the distance, it becomes easier to get a unit that will range that distance and prevent you from frightening the target. Every hunter can face a scenario where they get too close and drive the herd away – and it can take several hours to locate another chance.

3.     Improves Your Guessing Skills

While on the field, you may have to act in different scenarios. Sometimes a deer can run up in front of you, and you just don’t have the time to pick up the rangefinder. Frequent use of the tool will enable you to improve your estimating skills and help you guess accurate distances when you have to act quickly.

4.     Makes Hunting on Steep Terrains Easier

Whether you are hunting in the mountains or a sloppy area, having a rangefinder will make work much easier for you. Relying on your math skills to calculate the accurate angle shot and making sure that gravity does not affect your shot’s path can be frustrating. However, the angle features of a rangefinder will allow you to know the accurate horizontal distance from the target so that you make precise shots.

5.     Doesn’t Weigh You Down

Nowadays, hunters are finding ways to avoid carrying heavy hunting gear during the hunting season. Because of development in the tech industry, rangefinders have become smaller and more advanced over the past years. The modernized versions can be comfortably carried around the neck or attached to your belt, making them very quick to access during the action.

How to Use a Laser Rangefinder

The best thing about this tool is that it is simple and easy to use. All you need to do is simply point the rangefinder towards the target and look through the lens to see the magnified image of the target. The magnification varies in different models, and it is usually between 5x and 7x.

Once you have captured your target you can go ahead and press the measure button on the rangefinder. Crosshairs will appear in your view and once they are accurately set on the target, you’ll need to push the measure button for a second time which will emit the beam and give you the measured distance.
