Katy ISD Student Wins $10,000 Science Olympiad Scholarship

Seven Lakes High School senior Stephanie Wang was recently announced as one of five high school seniors in the country to receive a $10,000 Science Olympiad Founders’ Scholarship.  This scholarship award recognizes the outstanding academic achievement of students, their character and their contributions to their community.

At the start of the pandemic, Wang addressed the spread of misinformation by writing Epidemiology Unmasked, a textbook explaining infectious disease outbreak investigations that has since been recognized by the United States Congress.  Her subsequent campaign, Project Unmasked, is an initiative to promote public health literacy in communities, and has reached 70,000 people and taught over 4,000 students via online resources and curricula.

“When the world came to a standstill because of a worldwide pandemic, Stephanie took this opportunity to educate the community on this concerning infectious disease,” said Seven Lakes High School Principal Kerri Finnesand.  “I could say that Stephanie will go places and she’ll discover new things and will end up saving lives, but she’s already doing those things,” added Finnesand.

“I aspire for a career at the intersection of medicine, research and public policy – a unique combination forged from my early explorations in Science Olympiad,” said Wang.  She will take her studies to Harvard University this fall, where she plans to study both Molecular & Cellular Biology and Government.

The Science Olympiad Program was founded by Dr. Gerard Putz, Sharon Putz and Jack Cairns nearly four decades ago.  Each year, the winners of the Founders’ Scholarship embody service, diligence and a passion for science.
