How Do I Stop Myself From Buying Things That I Do Not Need?

We all are guilty of piling up stuff that we don’t actually need. I observed this trend in my shopping soon after I began my first job. It took me a couple of months to realize how much I was wasting just because I could not hold back from buying excessive and unnecessary items. Initially, I could partly blame shopping platforms like Compass dollar tree for employees and clients alike, which meant only one thing: Shopping spree that was unstoppable. How was I able to put brakes on this habit? Let me share with you!

First Thing First, I Did an Inventory Check

I made it a habit to constantly check out what I already have in stock so I would not end up buying stuff and regretting it later. This goes for clothes, accessories, and even the groceries in the kitchen.

I Made Sure I Was Using The Stuff In My Closet

Now, the next step was to ensure that none of the items in my wardrobe went unused. This was especially true for favorite wear like jeans and shirts that I wore less because I wanted them to last longer.

The truth is that if you invest in good quality, you would be able to reuse stuff without the worry of damaging them too early. It is the other way around when you buy cheap clothes. They will be ripped off quality soon and then you will have to buy some more. The results? Too much spending on clothes every week and every year.

I Also Learned to Play a Little Game With Myself.

Oh, this was quite interesting! So, as a way to curb my shopping temptation, I taught myself a trick. Whenever I had the inclination to buy something at the store, I would wait for 20 minutes, roam around in the aisle, and keep window-shopping.

The aim was to see if I had the same temptation after some time had passed and the feeling of impulsive shopping had died down. In most of the cases, I could easily walk out without wasting money and, in this way, I saved a lot more than previous months.

It Is Important To See Where Your Money Is Going

To my luck, I mostly used a Cash App to shop in-store. By the end of the shopping spree, Cash App has a history log that you can delete or save as per your need. I could easily go through the details at the end of the week or month to have some idea of the stuff I bought and what could have been avoided.

Over a period of a couple of months, I was able to develop better shopping habits using this simple trick.

As a take-home message, I would also like to bring your attention to another interesting shopping mistake that most of us make. It is the mistake of falling for the trap of “FREE” purchases or “DISCOUNTS”. Why? Let’s say you went to the market to get yourself a tee. There you saw that if you buy 2 of them you will get another one for FREE. Although this seems like a good deal, remember that you primarily needed just one item but you ended up spending on two which you may or may not need in the future. Not quite free, right?

Similarly, shoppers are also often interested in buying items that get them gifts without realizing that they could have saved the money instead. This used to be one of the most typical ways in which I often ended up going beyond my budget. Well, not anymore, and I hope I was able to save you too!
