The great debate: vapes vs bongs- which is better?

The great debate about which is better between vapes and bongs has been going on for years believe it or not, with both sides having valid points supporting their use and function. With that being said, there can only be one winner for this debate. So, which is better between the two? Is it vaping? Or perhaps smoking a bong? To dive deeper we will be taking a look at the pros and cons of each consumption method to see which ones reign supreme and take the title as the better consumption method.

The history of vapes and bongs

Today, bongs are typically made from glass, acrylic, metal, plastic, and other materials. However, the very first bongs were made out of bamboo wood and were used by the Chinese for smoking tobacco. In the 1960s, bongs started gaining popularity amongst Hippies in America who started using glass bongs to smoke cannabis and since then, bongs have grown in popularity and now brands like Molino Glass sell bongs that come in all different shapes, sizes, and colors and are used all over the world as one of the most traditional and popular smoking devices. Vapes on the other hand were also created in China though they are a much more modern invention, first hitting the scene in 2003 as an alternative to smoking the traditional way. Vapes then started gaining popularity in America in 2010 when the device started being marketed as a healthier alternative to smoking. Today you will find that bongs are still very popular amongst cannabis smokers, while vapes are growing in popularity among people who wish to quit smoking cigarettes.

How they work

A bong is a water filtration device that is used to smoke dry herbs, mainly cannabis. This device uses combustion as well as water to purify the smoke for a smoother hit as well as a more enjoyable experience. A vape, on the other hand, is a handheld, battery-powered inhalation device that creates vapor by heating your dry herb or concentrates at a controlled temperature. To use a bong, you first need to fill the device with a small amount of water and then stack some dry, crushed cannabis into the bowl. You need to put a flame directly onto the dry herbs until it starts to burn and then you proceed by inhaling through the mouthpiece while burning the herb and also keeping your finger on the clutch of the bong which is a small hole on the neck. You will then notice the water starting to bubble and the bong filling up with white smoke caused by the combustion. Once the bong is filled to your satisfaction, stop the flame and release the clutch while inhaling the smoke in the bong. A vape, on the other hand, works much differently.

You need to fill the chamber with a small number of dry herbs, turn the device on, select your preferred heating temperature, wait a while for the vape to heat up, and then begin inhaling and exhaling.  Both bongs and vapes are user-friendly as well as beginner-friendly and they both produce less smoke and smell while also using less dry herbs per session which enables you to save money long term. Bongs do however rely on combustion which is associated with many health risks including lung cancer while vapes are associated with causing dry mouth and throat, coughing, headaches, and shortness of breath.

How to choose the right one for you

When choosing between a bong and a vape, you need to consider what your needs are. Bongs are more for home use and are not a device to invest in if you are looking for something portable or discreet. Vapes on the other hand are smaller devices that are popular for their convenience and portability as well as the discretion it provides users. You also need to look at the effects of each and whether you want to inhale smoke or vapor. Ultimately, vapes are associated with being safer for your lungs than a bong which is something to consider when making your decision.  If you’re looking for something more affordable, bongs are the way to go while vapes are more durable.
