Some tax forms must be filed with the IRS along with supporting attachments called “schedules.” Form 1040 is among such documents. According to the latest guidelines, it has 13 additions. To understand which template you should fill out, you need to know the features of each. In this article, we will talk about filing a Schedule C. After reading, you will be able to enter the required information quickly and file documents on time.
What Is a Schedule C?
A Schedule C fillable form is also sometimes referred to as Profit and Loss. The second name fully reflects the essence of this document, which is mandatory for all self-employed. Every person who has sole proprietorship has to report the amounts received or lost during the past tax year to the tax office. Since this paper is an attachment, it should be sent along with a correctly completed Form 1040. If your self-employed activity is sporadic and more like a hobby, that is, it does not bring regular and continuous income, it is not subject to reporting. The IRS does not classify such work as a “business.”
How to Fill Out a Schedule C Form?
In this article, we will not dwell on filling out the main Form 1040 but will describe the process of entering data only into its attachment. The Schedule C is a two-page file with quite a lot of lines, so be extremely careful when filling it out:
- Before proceeding to the main part, enter your business information and answer general questions about your activities at the top of the first sheet.
- In Part 1, you should enter income data: the total amount of items provided, refunds, differences between them and your income, the overall cost of sold products, and gross profit and income.
- Part 2 is about calculating your expenses. Here you can list all costs for travel, transportation, rent, third-party professional services, utilities, and so on. Sum the information from all rows to get total expenses.
- In Part 3, you need to calculate the cost of services and goods provided, taking into account various details such as the price of materials used and supplies.
- If you use a vehicle for business purposes, please indicate it in Part 4. Be sure to mention if you or your spouse utilizes the car for personal purposes.
- The previous parts of the Schedule C template have precise wording. If they do not fully disclose your expenses, you can list them in Part 5 in a free form.
Please note that this form does not require the placeholder’s signature.
How to File Schedule C?
The IRS encourages taxpayers to file documents electronically. You can file a Schedule C online using a dedicated IRS service or contacting an authorized provider for assistance. This option is most acceptable since it takes less time for specialists to process all incoming messages. The traditional way of sending mails is also available; however, in this case, processing will take longer.
Usually, the deadline for submitting Schedule C is mid-April. In the current year, the completed documents must be submitted no later than April 18th. If you need to extend your deadline, complete Form 4868 to receive a six-month extension.
Schedule C is a mandatory attachment for anyone not officially employed at an enterprise. Keep in mind that you should fill out a separate form for each of your freelancing activities. We hope our guide will make your task easier.
