Is it cheaper to build a garage or buy a kit?

Deciding whether to build a garage yourself or buy a kit is something you can only do when you look at all the different factors, and one of the most important is going to be price. Here’s some information about how to make the choice and the comparison in price between the two options.

Garage Kit Cost Advantage

One of the biggest advantages of getting a garage kit is that the kits are often going to be considerably less expensive. There are usually a number of different options for garage kits, all at a significant discount, usually, when compared to a pre-built option. This means that you can find the build you need for your home while not spending too much on it.

Plus, on top of that, you won’t have any labor costs since you’ll be doing it yourself. All you have to pay for is the materials within the kit, essentially, and you won’t have many costs beyond that. All this means that you can end up with a much cheaper garage than what you’d get otherwise.

A Detailed Comparison

If you’re looking for a one-car kit for a garage, the total cost is going to come out to between $3500 and $6000 depending on what materials that you use. For example, steel construction kits will often be more cost-effective than other options. The cost goes up based on how many cars it has to fit. For example, if you want to fit 2 cars, then the cost is going to be closer to $5000 just to begin with a basic version.

Four car garage kits can go from a starting cost of around $10,000 to as high as $40,000. However, believe it or not, for a 4 car garage, this is still going to be much less than what it would cost to build everything from nothing.

When it comes to getting a custom garage, you have to pay for so much more and the costs go up surprisingly fast. If you decide to do it without a kit, then you have to worry about getting your hands on plans. While it’s possible to buy some prefab plans, attached garages are often going to require the help of an architect pro. This means that just the plans alone could cost as much as $5000.

Then, you’re going to need to pay for materials, for equipment and labor and a few other things besides. At the end of the day, you’re going to end up paying several times what you pay for a kit. Obviously, there are a lot of tradeoffs to consider here, like the fact that you have to do all the work yourself with a kit, but if you want to save money, it’s completely straightforward in terms of comparison.

You will spend a fortune trying to go without a kit in comparison to what it will cost if you do use a garage kit, especially if you only need space for 1 car.
