The Most Common Knee Problems And Their Solutions To Relieve Your Pain

Knee pain can have a variety of causes. It can be caused by a sudden injury or an old one. Other than those mentioned, knee pain is also caused by certain conditions such as Arthritis. Although knee pain can be annoyingly painful for most people, athletes usually suffer the most because the pain hinders them from bringing their best version out. Causes Of Knee Pain

To know the causes of knee pain we first need to learn about the anatomy of the knee. The knee joint is made up of four major components: bone, cartilage, ligaments, and fluid. Knee problems arise when any of the components is damaged or is not working properly. The most common causes of knee pain are as below.

  1. Sprained Or Strained Ligaments

A sprained or strained knee is often the most common type of knee problem or injury. It’s mostly caused by a strong blow to the joints or when twisted under any influence. Its symptoms may include swelling, pain, and even difficulty in walking.

  1. Torn Cartilage

A torn cartilage is very dangerous. This happens when a trauma to the knee tears the menisci. Menisci are pads that are made of connective tissue and their job is to act as shock absorbers to improve our overall stability. A cartilage tear usually occurs with knee pain and treatments include wearing a brace for a specific period to make sure the knee is well protected during any activity.

  1. Tendonitis

Tendonitis is usually said to be the inflammation of the tendons; a consequence of putting too much pressure on the tendons in certain activities which involve jumping, cycling or running. The most common form of tendonitis is the patellar tendon, also termed as Jumper’s knee. This often occurs in sports because of excessive jumping or running. The root cause of tendonitis is the force of hitting the ground after jumping, causing the knee to be strained.

Arthritis is by far one of the most common knee problems, with Osteoarthritis being the usual main culprit. This condition is a sort of degenerative process in which the cartilage in the joint gradually wears away. Middle-aged or old people are mostly affected by this condition because of being overweight or having an excess amount of stress on the joint.

Solutions Or Treatments

  1. RICE

RICE stands for rest, ice, compression, and elevation. The RICE treatment is often good for acute pain, but medication for chronic pain may be different. Since the treatment for chronic pain is different, resting or keeping your legs stationary for too long may damage the weakened muscles that needed to move or strengthen.

  1. Heat and Ice Packs

Heat is used for a variety of aches and pains. You can use any wheat bag, heat bottle, or heat lamp, and gentle warmth is perfect. Some people prefer ice packs. These can be made by adding ice cubes to a plastic bag then placing the bag on the affected area.

  1. Exercise And Physical Therapy

Exercise and therapy are by far the first recommendation of each and every doctor, seeing that exercises stretch the muscles and ease the pain. When exercising, you need to be very careful in terms of the activity selection because an unfitting exercise to your condition can do more harm than good. If the knee pain is too intense, you’ll need to choose the correct knee brace when exercising to provide proper support and aid to your knees. Selecting the correct brace for the knee is important because an inappropriate type of brace could damage your knee bone while exercising.

  1. Lifestyle Changes

Changing your lifestyle is a fairly good idea. There are a number of lifestyle changes you can make to reduce your knee pain. A solid example is to maintain a healthy diet to have a normal weight because people who are above the desirable weight tend to have more knee problems, and certain activities such as running could also be avoided to lessen the pain.

  1. Genicular Nerve Blocks

Nerve blocking is seen as a last resort. If other treatments fail then blocking the nerves is the next course of action which transmits signals from the knee joint to the brain. This is first done with the injection that renders the patient paralyzed for a minimum amount of time, then a procedure called radiofrequency ablation is used. The radiofrequency ablation uses heat and coagulates proteins that are present in the nerve which in turn stops pain signals.

 

Knee pains can be slight or even deadly. Daily life changes, habits, and routines can affect our body’s strongest joint. For an athlete or a sportsman, having a knee problem is the worst thing they could imagine. There are various knee problems a person can have, just the same as the number of treatments available to make sure your knees are perfect. You should know about these problems and their solutions to ensure you’re aware of the best thing you can do in case of knee pain.
