Harris County Pets Hosts Adoption Special of $10 for Dogs 40 pounds and Over

During a time of the year when many shelters typically experience an uptick in the number of animals entering the shelter, Harris County Pets (HCP) is responding with a special offer for potential pet adopters. All dogs 40 pounds and over at its facility are available for adoption at a reduced fee of only $10 now through April 18. Adopters also receive a free bag of Old Mother Hubbard Natural Treats for their new furry companion while supplies last.

The offer comes as HCP has recently seen an increase in the number of pets, especially dogs, entering the shelter. The recent uptick is primarily due to warmer weather (when animals are more active, and puppies and kittens are being born) and residents surrendering their pets as they return to work during the pandemic.

“We have an abundance of larger dogs at our facility that interact well in our play groups and will make great family companions,” said Michael White, DVM, MS, director of Harris County Veterinary Public Health, which operates the Harris County Pets Resource Center. “It is not unusual for our facility to house an increasing animal population at this time of year. We encourage residents who are seriously considering adopting a pet to visit our new facility and take advantage of our adoption special.”

All adoptions at HCP include spay/neuter, microchip with lifetime registration, a one-year Harris County pet license and age-appropriate vaccinations. Interested adopters can view pictures and profiles of the pets at www.CountyPets.com.

Due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, Harris County Pets continues to schedule all visits and appointments by phone only. To make an appointment, call (981) 999-3191 in advance. Walk-ins are not accepted.

HCP is located at 612 Canino Road in Houston.

Featured Longer-Stay Dogs at Harris County Pets

Below are a few longer-stay dogs (in custody over 6 days) available for adoption at Harris County Pets (HCP). Visit www.CountyPets.com for a viewing of all pets available for adoption.

Name: Infinity
Animal ID: A56994
Breed: American Staff mix
Gender: Female (spayed)
Approximate Age: 5 years old
Weight: 48 pounds

Infinity’s owner surrendered her to Harris County Pets on March 16 because the owner said she was homeless and was unable to keep her dog where she was staying. According to one HCP staff member, Infinity is a “super sweet dog” and can sit on command.  She is house-trained, enjoys the company of humans (mainly adults) and might need some time to get along with other dogs.

Name: Patsy
Animal ID: A570866
Breed: American Staff mix
Gender: Female
Approximate age: 5 years old
Weight: 40.5 pounds

Patsy is a friendly lady who was brought in as a stray on March 29. She interacts well with other dogs and is very affectionate to humans.  One Harris County Pets staff member noted that Patsy is a “very sweet dog, possibly potty-trained and gets very playful once she warms up.” She added that Patsy “likes affection and will give hugs – walks well on a leash.” Patsy has heartworm disease, which is a common and highly treatable condition among dogs.

Name: Fonda
Animal ID: A570541
Breed: Pit Bull Terrier mix
Gender: Female (spayed)
Approximate age: 2 years old
Weight: 58 pounds

Fonda was one of two stray dogs that was picked up by animal control officers on a citizen call on March 24. One HCP staff observed that Fonda is a friendly dog who enjoys her play time. Fonda “likes toys and knows ‘sit’, ‘shake’ and ‘down’, she said.

Name: Bubbles
Animal ID: A568756
Breed: American Staff
Gender: Female (spayed)
Approximate Age: 4 years old
Weight: 65.5 pounds

An adopter returned Bubbles to Harris County Pets on March 30 because although Bubble was able to get along with the owner’s other dog and her grandchildren, she didn’t do well with her cat. Bubbles is heartworm positive but is eligible for free heartworm treatment through the Heal-a-Heart Program, made possible on private donations by caring individuals in the community. She is one of Harris County Pets’ friendly longer-stay dogs in need of a forever family – sans a cat!
