The changes and new rules implemented because of the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK.

The Coronavirus made a lot of changes in the way that the world was functioning with new rules and regulations surrounding the work market. In the initial stages of the virus affecting the world, the UK Government went through a national lockdown where they started closing shops and businesses to prevent its spread. Overall, this was not good for business, and a lot of companies could not keep up, causing many of them to go under and had to shut. The Government, to assist the people losing their jobs, went through a different approach and released various schemes that would help with the process. The most significant one was the furlough scheme that was paying the salaries of a large number of people while their company was only paying the difference.

There were no other means of reducing the number of people who were infected by the virus without lockdowns. The only step that the Government was taking was imposing restrictions but allowing businesses to function. For most of the pandemic, businesses and companies were allowed to begin working remotely. For businesses, who had no choice but to meet and communicate in person, like smaller restaurants and others in similar lines of work, they implemented restrictions mentioning the number of people who could meet indoors. They also defined the amount of distance that people were to maintain between one another along with additional rules, like wearing masks and using hand-sanitizer as often as possible.

As the number of people who were sick with the Coronavirus started increasing again, the Government decided against a lockdown and went ahead and imposed stricter restrictions. In the major towns and most popular locations, they introduced the rule of six, which meant that more than six people were not allowed to meet. While this was a massive struggle for restaurants and pubs, it was the middle ground between shutting down completely. The same number of people could not meet at their offices as they were in the past, and now meetings were dependant on the size of the office.

Around the initial days of the pandemic, people were following the rules since it was the right thing to do and to stay as safe as possible, however, the second time around, the Government imposed stricter restrictions, allowing the police to implement them and penalize people who were not following them. While their intentions revolved around not going through another lockdown, they needed their number of infected people to stay low, or they would not have a choice. Unfortunately, the number of infected kept increasing, and the Government pushed against a wall, implementing another lockdown, which did receive a small amount of protest in the country.

Since the virus was new, people were learning about it through research and publishing the findings that were constantly improved and updated. The media, along with the authorities, wanted to keep people as informed as possible so they were passing information and measures that they could take, as and when they were receiving them. There was no proper way to distribute the information to the public since everyone was learning from a different source. The Government made sure all their data was uploaded and detailed on proper Government channels, along with all other information relating to Government sources.

With so many changes taking place across the board, the Government was also working on new rules relating to the entire process, and they needed to create new schemes as well. Another challenge that came about with the Coronavirus pandemic was that hospitals and other medical institutions could not keep up with the numbers they were receiving. For the longest time, the healthcare system across the UK was overburdened. There were a lot of people admitted, but only the critical cases were worked on priority, while there were not enough resources to handle both the COVID patients and the rest of the people.

While getting employment might have been difficult for most, some companies were not doing to bad. However, employers who had to work on employing people were not sure how they were supposed to get through the process. In the past, people would attend interviews, giving employers a chance to understand the person they were hiring. With the entire process now virtual, they were not even meeting the person they were planning on working with, while talking to them and getting to know them, before and after the job, remotely.

Getting background checks was now the new normal, and all employers were mandatorily asking for them. Depending on the job that they were applying for, they would have to handle various

levels of the checks. Most companies wanted to make sure they were working with someone who did not have a criminal record while some positions, like working in the medical profession meant that they needed more detailed tests. Some checks went through records and police databases to find out if there were issues when they were dealing with various types of people. These checks usually come in play when coordinating with the elderly or youngest or applying for jobs in the medical sector, retirement homes or nursing, and so many other options.

Most of the background checks, especially when they came to people applying for jobs in the medical field were fast-tracked since the hospitals needed all the help that they could get.

Additionally, just getting through a background check was not enough and they had to get a

police check that was coordinated through the police department who would check for additional information including whether they had any misdemeanours working with different age groups like the younger or older people. Additionally, there were mandatory regular checks at the hospital as well to make sure that the doctors did not catch the virus or have a chance at spreading it to anyone else. These were the same police checks that were used for other purposes like applying for a visa to move out of the country and so on.
