Cultural Diversity, Social Justice Commitment Reaffirmed by Social Workers During Global Diversity Awareness Month

Social workers advance equity, dignity and inclusion through daily practice and advocacy

National Association of Social WorkersWASHINGTON, D.C. (Oct. 20, 2025) – In observance of Global Diversity Awareness Month, the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is reaffirming the profession’s long-standing ethical commitment to social justice and cultural diversity. From its founding principles to its ongoing advocacy, NASW underscores that respect for human dignity and the pursuit of equity are inseparable from the practice of social work.

“Global Diversity Awareness Month is a reminder that advancing equity is not a one-time observance but an enduring responsibility,” said NASW CEO Dr. Anthony Estreet. “Diversity strengthens the social work profession and our nation. By valuing difference and acting for justice, social workers help build a more compassionate and globally aware society — challenging discrimination and dismantling barriers that prevent full participation in every community.”

Rooted in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Global Diversity Awareness Month aligns directly with the NASW Code of Ethics, which calls on social workers to challenge social injustice and honor cultural and ethnic diversity. NASW demonstrates its commitment through advocacy for inclusive policies, equitable access to services, and a workforce that represents the communities it serves.

Through its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives, NASW continues to strengthen the profession’s ability to serve individuals and families from all backgrounds. The association advocates for fair licensure pathways, equitable representation in leadership, and policies that reduce systemic inequities in health, education and employment.

As Global Diversity Awareness Month highlights the richness of human diversity, NASW calls on policymakers, institutions and practitioners to continue advancing inclusion year-round — ensuring that all people have equal access to opportunities, safety and well-being.
